The Accommodation Specialist reports to the Associate Director of Disability Services and serves as a member of the SDS leadership team. The Accommodation Specialist assists the Disability Services office with administering highly specialized support for students with disabilities at the New School. The Accommodations Specialist assists in ensuring compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) and the revisions under the Americans with Disabilities Act. This position works collaboratively with students, faculty, and administration to support a campus population of 10,000 students.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages an active caseload of students with disabilities which includes management of and training on available accessible technology.

Maintaining accurate and confidential records for each student related to eligibility.

Research and recommend new accessible equipment, technologies and software, via work with the Accessibility & Technology Committee.

Coordinates American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter and CART (Communication Access Real-Time Translation) for students requiring access to faculty, staff and/or University events with external providers or other vendors.

Conducts disability eligibility analyses, provides referrals, approves reasonable accommodations, and connects individuals with accessible services to support their employment goals.

Educates campus constituencies regarding support for individuals with disabilities and facilitates compliance with the ADA/ADAAA and related federal, state, and local regulations and University policies.

Collaboration with Facilities, Colleges, Libraries, and the Registrar’s Office to assess accommodation needs and resolve course, classroom, and residential access issues to ensure students have physical and electronic access to campus living and learning environments.

Creates, implements, and promotes educational materials and awareness regarding accessible course content, physical accessibility, and sensitivity for students with disabilities.

Oversee SDS test scheduling and priority registration administration practices, with support from SDS’ graduate assistant(s).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field.

Experience with Assistive Technology and document conversion (e.g: Smart Pens, FM System, Captioning, Accessible Text conversion, Adobe Acrobat).

Demonstrated experience working with disability/access services within an educational setting (preferably college or university).

Understanding of emerging issues in higher education, particularly in Access and Disability Services.

Applied understanding of student development and multiple identity theories.

Demonstrated intercultural competence, and a continuing commitment to advance equity, inclusion, and social justice practices in support of a diverse community.

Impeccable integrity and ability to handle complex, sensitive, and confidential issues.

Ability to build trusting relationships with all constituencies within the university community.

Strong organizational and program development skills.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
-
Involved regionally or nationally in professional development associations within higher education.

Master’s degree and one (1) to three (3) years of progressive experience in higher education.

Working knowledge of/Experience with Accommodate, or another Disability Services Data Management System.

Experience in developing and facilitating professional training for students, faculty, and staff.

$65,000 - $70,000
