About the Job

The primary responsibility of this position is to support research in health data science, with a particular focus on the analysis of electronic health records (EHR), clinical notes, and other
related data. The role will also involve contributing to general lab operations and assisting with data-driven health informatics projects. This is a temporary, full-time 1-year appointment.

Job Duties

Data Analysis (70%)

  • Develop and execute data processing pipelines and protocols for structured and unstructured EHR data, with emphasis on clinical text analysis.
  • Annotate, clean, and preprocess clinical notes and other healthcare-related text using Python or NLP toolkits
  • Assist in building, fine-tuning, and evaluating NLP models for tasks such as named entity recognition, document classification, information extraction, and clinical outcome
    prediction.
  • Collaborate with clinical and informatics researchers to interpret and validate model
    outputs and findings.
  • Maintain documentation of code, models, and data processes to ensure reproducibility and regulatory compliance.

Research Support (15%)

  • Assist with clinical research projects by analyzing multimodal data (e.g., notes, structured EHR, metadata).
  • Contribute to the preparation of research manuscripts, posters, and presentations.
  • Help coordinate efforts across interdisciplinary collaborators and maintain accurate records of research activities.

Lab Operations and Communication (15%)

  • Help manage lab data resources, research software tools, and cloud computing environments.
  • Assist with IRB documentation, data access compliance, and secure handling of sensitive health information (HIPAA compliance).
  • Supervise other research assistants as needed and contribute to the onboarding and mentoring of new lab members.
Qualifications

All required qualifications must be included in the application materials

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in biomedical informatics, computational biology, health data science or a related field OR an equivalent combination of education and experience totaling at least four (4) years.
  • Experience working with Python and/or R for data analysis.
  • Familiarity with healthcare data formats.

Preferred:

  • Experience with NLP libraries (e.g., HuggingFace Transformers) and clinical text data.
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) for text analysis.
  • Knowledge of clinical terminologies (e.g., ICD, SNOMED, LOINC, UMLS).
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Prior experience in academic or clinical research settings, especially involving interdisciplinary teams.
About the Department

The Health Data Science Lab is housed within the Division of Computational Health Sciences at Department of Surgery, the University of Minnesota. The lab conducts innovative research at the intersection of data science, clinical informatics, and healthcare delivery. We work with large- scale, real-world clinical datasets to develop trustworthy and impactful AI tools for improving patient care and clinical decision-making, with an emphasis on interpretability, equity, and translational impact.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $41,600 per year

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
