We are looking for an experienced Histotechnologist to perform histology duties and help manage the laboratory. In this university research core facility, they will perform various technical tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing research specimens for histology examination, analysis, and scientific use by the client/end-user. This may include logging, batching, cutting, mounting, and staining procedures. Specimens will be processed and handled for research and related purposes. The candidate will also use their expertise in histology to help advise and demonstrate to staff, implement the lab systems, and perform quality control. Reporting to and following the instructions of the Director of the core facility, the candidate will help supervise the lab activities within the Histology stream. This will include coordination, implementation and performance of all the various tasks required for the completion of all histology procedures and interaction with our core microscopy stream. PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Technical Support * Assist with histological sample preparation, including tissue processing, embedding, sectioning (paraffin and cryosectioning), and staining techniques (e.g., special stains, immunohistochemistry) as well as some slide scanning and occasional basic microscopy. * Maintain standards and histology practices, including quality control * Adapt and develop practices to meet the wide range of tissues and requirements encountered in the research setting * Provide training to coworkers and users on proper technique and handling * There will be opportunities to extend their histology background into digital pathology and spatial biology streams. * Troubleshoot issues with instrumentation and assist with minor repairs or liaise with service engineers for maintenance. * Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of biological samples and hazardous materials in compliance with safety standards. * Support data transfer and storage. Operational Management * Manage day-to-day operations of the core facility, including scheduling, coordination of services, and tracking usage. * Assist with lab management and booking software * Maintain an organized inventory of consumables, reagents, and supplies. Assist with purchasing and restocking. * Develop and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for equipment and lab processes. * Perform routine calibration and quality control checks on equipment to ensure accurate results. User Support and Collaboration * Collaborate with researchers to optimize protocols and provide technical assistance for specialized projects. * Advise users on sample preparation, and where necessary if it impacts on their experiment design and interpretation. * Ensure excellent customer service and timely delivery of results to core users. Administrative Responsibilities * Maintain accurate records of lab activities, equipment usage, and service requests. * Assist with billing and invoicing for core services and usage. * Prepare reports on core activity, including usage metrics and performance indicators. * Support grant applications and reports related to core operations and upgrades. Training and Development * Stay up-to-date on advances in histology techniques and share knowledge with users and staff. * Participate in professional development opportunities, such as workshops, conferences, and training sessions. WORKING CONDITIONS * Work primarily in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. * Hours are flexible to meet the needs of the applicant. Schedules can be developed in cooperation with the Director to meet the needs of the job in a manner that is compatible with the applicant and the client base. * The position is part-time (12 hours/week) but the share of time can be revised in future * Performs other duties as assigned KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES * Proficiency in histological techniques, including tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining. * Tissue preparation skills for electron microscopy would be helpful but not essential * Background understanding of digital pathology and spatial biology fields is helpful but not essential * Computer and technical aptitude * Awareness of research needs and the ability to adapt * Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for record-keeping and lab management. * Excellent problem-solving skills for troubleshooting equipment and protocol issues. * Strong interpersonal and communication skills for user interactions and training. * Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS * Bachelor's degree in biology, biomedical sciences, or a related field * Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in histology. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS * Certified HTL (ASCP) * Background with performing histology for research purposes * Familiarity with compliance standards, including biosafety and chemical safety.
