Overview and Responsibilities

The Career Services Specialist assists students with all aspects of employment search and career planning. The Career Services Specialist plans, develops, and conducts presentations and workshops to enhance students' career and educational advancement. The Career Services Specialist serves as a liaison between job seeking students, graduates, and employers to secure employment. This position supports administration, the Student Services team, and instructional staff.

Responsibilities:

    Manage and assist employers and students with CVTC's Handshake employment database.
  • Assist students in accessing career exploration tools and other technologies to assist with mock interviews and resume/cover letter development.
  • Assist students with employment searches, resume building, interviewing, and other career preparation activities.
  • In conjunction with faculty and employers, assist students in identifying and securing internships aligned with programmatic and career goals.
  • Participate in regional or state-wide career services consortiums, such as WI-ACE, or partnerships to share best practices and expand employer networks.
  • Provide classroom presentations to program students to highlight career services.
  • In conjunction with the Director of Career Development & First Year Experience, serve as a liaison for college wide career development training to ensure best practices across all divisions.
  • In alignment with NACE Career Competencies, develop and deliver workshops aimed at developing a student's career confidence through the student life-cycle.
  • Assist students in making appropriate academic and career choices through career advisement, career planning, and career exploration.
  • Collaborate with faculty to embed career readiness into academic program courses as appropriate.
  • Maintain CVTC's Career Development webpage to ensure that resource materials are current and applicable.
  • Manage all aspects of career fairs, including assisting with career services promotions to employers and students, coordination of staff volunteers, and college-wide communication.
  • Assist with career development related grant initiatives as relevant to program goals.
  • Support cross-functional initiatives related to student success and career development, as directed by the Director of Career Development & First Year Experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to model integrity through self-awareness, personal accountability, ethical behavior, quality standards, and sustainable practices.
  • Ability to think critically by applying problem solving practices, acquiring relevant information, using technology and other resources appropriately, and evaluating alternatives.

  • Ability to recognize personal biases, adapt to different cultural situations, and demonstrate a commitment to respectful interactions with persons of various ethnic, cultural, socio-economic, or educational backgrounds.
  • Intermediate knowledge of and skills with technology including software programs for communication, data collection, and decision making including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, School Counseling, Higher Education, or related field with a minimum of four years of related experience required; master's degree in a related field as above, with a minimum of two years of related experience preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of related experience in a student/client services area; including experience administering career planning and career placement.
  • Post-secondary experience preferred.
