Position Summary:Under limited direction, the advisor participates in the planning and delivery of academic advising services and programs which promote student success and increase student enrollment and retention by promoting programs, referring students at risk or in need of additional resources with the primary objective to assist with making informed decisions concerning their educational goals.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist new incoming freshman, readmit and post baccalaureate students in the development of an educational plan including but not limited to choosing a program of study and/or clarifying educational goals
- Inform students about alternatives, limitations and possible consequences of academic decisions (e.g. adding, dropping and withdrawing from courses; change of program, major and/or transfer institution)
- Educate students about course planning and registration processesand verifying course prerequisites and requirements
- Planning, implementing and presenting workshops, including but not limited to Student Success, Freshman Seminar, Degree Evaluation, and Undeclared Major both individually and in collaboration with other departments
- Help set-up, take down, and assist at various campus events such as open house, Major Fest, Dawg Days, special registration events and other campus activities
- Meeting with perspective students and guests to provide information about ENMU's programs of study and to discuss individual educational goals
- Serve on ENMU committees as designated or requested
- Refer to available on-and off-campus resources to address individual needs including career and personal counseling
- Interpret test results relevant to placement decisions and determines student readiness for university courses
- Make appropriate referrals for students perceived as at-risk, acts as an advocate when appropriate and serves as a source of support to students
- Work closely with Academic Services and the Office of Registrar to provide timely information on course/degree options and University policies
- Monitor and assists at-risk students including conditionally admitted students and provides outreach to students with early alert notifications
- Remain current regarding academic and administrative policies, procedures, catalog changes, technology used for advising services and requirements for university degree programs
- Gather, develop, and promote best practices for continuous improvement
- Participate in individual and team professional development
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements:
- A bachelor's degreein the humanities or a related field
- One to three years' experience in academic advising or related careers in post-secondary education, or a combination of education and experience commensurate with the requirements of the position
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to effectively analyze ambiguous information and respond appropriately
- Experience in group presentations
- Ability to process and maintain highly confidential information
- Ability to work effectively with individuals of varying backgrounds, abilities, outlooks, ages, and nationalities
- Knowledge of course disciplines, educational units, and educational history
- Knowledge of curriculum and academic processes and policies
- Knowledge of computerized student information systems (Banner Student Module is preferred)
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work professionally and effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community
- Ability to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude
- Ability to manage multiple and simultaneous responsibilities and to prioritize scheduling of work
- Ability to establish positive and productive working relationships with other units on campus
- Ability to understand and interpret the history, mission, and goals of the University to students and other constituent groups
- Demonstrate effective listening skills in order to interpret individual student needs
- Ability to promote a safe environment for students and coworkers including deescalating high stress situations
- Ability to effectively organize and file information both physically and electronically
- Must be of good moral character with conduct consistent with the University and state code of conduct.

Physical Demand and Working Conditions:Work is performed during normal hours but may include evening and weekend hours; is sedentary with 20 pounds maximum weight to lift and carry; requires reaching, handling with the use of the hands, arms and fingers, talking and/or hearing; and seeing.
