Job Description
In charge of developing and overseeing the execution of major technical projects for Saltchuk Marine's operating companies barges and designated vessels. This includes managing major (statutory) dry dockings, significant repair/modification initiatives, and engine repower projects. Accountable for meeting performance metrics, with a focus on dry dock efficiency, cost control, marine asset reliability, and minimizing out-of-service time. Establishes and maintains productive working relationships with technical management, vendors, customers, shipyards, and other stakeholders. Essential Functions:
- Support the implementation of dry dock planning and execution guidelines to ensure high levels of planning, scheduling, and financial discipline.
- Provide hands-on support during dry dock planning and execution, including on-site presence for complex dry docks.
- Partner with the Senior Dry Dock Manager, who has the programmatic dry dock program lead, to coordinate all dry dock planning, minimizing business interruptions and maximizing financial performance.
- Collaborate with SMT and operating company stakeholders to manage contractual obligations and ensure transparency in maintenance, repair, and capital planning.
- Work closely with SMSS and operating company technical teams for coordination of dry dock planning, contracting, selection, and development of technical specifications; including procurement of parts and services.
- Coordinates and supports the execution of the dry dock planning project management tools, coordinates daily dry dock progress updates and financial updates to ensure on time dry dock departure.
- Perform dry dock performance reviews measure KPIs and document lessons learned to drive continuous improvement.
- Performs project management for other technical asset management projects as needed.
Knowledge Of:
- Marine engineering, mechanical engineering, system safety and reliability and shipyard safety requirements.
- Ship and barge operation, maintenance, and repair.
- Coast Guard regulations and ABS Rules applicable to steel vessel construction and repair.
Skills and Abilities:
- Operational experience in the towing environment on towing vessels of not less than 3000 KW.
- Excellent oral and written English (technical and conversational).
- Proficient with Microsoft office suite of software.
- Detailed expertise in the operation and repair of marine equipment and systems is required.
- Knowledge of the applicable classification and flag state requirements.
- Experience with ship repair and repair management.
- Ability to prepare and follow budgets.
- Ability to work under tight deadlines and financial pressure.
- Competent in time and resource management, capable of managing conflicting goals within a project and of making decisions within a highly constrained environment.
- Capable of supporting and influencing a group of diverse stakeholders with competing motivations and expectations.
- Strong communication skills across multiple levels in the organization and with external and internal stakeholders.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A minimum of 7-10 years of experience in marine engineering including but not limited to vessel design, operation, management, and repair.
- Bachelor's degree in marine engineering or equivalent is preferred and may be considered as a viable substitute for work experience.
- Experience as a Chief Engineer preferred.
- A certification in project or program management is highly preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Approximately 50% of the work is conducted in a normal office environment; the remaining 50% is performed in the field around the vicinity of heavy equipment.
- May be required to work more than a normal workweek, including weekends.
- Travel will be required.
Physical/Mental Demands: Requires the ability to sit at a desk for extended periods of time and perform typical work in an office environment. For vessels and project onsite work or visits, the ability to climb ladders and over bulwarks is necessary. Ability to move between buildings, ascend/descend stairs and go outdoors in all kinds of weather. Overtime work is required as necessary, including occasional overnight travel and on-call status.

Compensation
Pay for this position will be between $113,172 and $169,757 annually.
