About the Role

The role of Locum Chief Editor provides a fantastic opportunity to truly shape the direction of a journal and act as the ambassador for the journal through engagement with the genome communities. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in helping to set the strategy for the journal, maximizing the visibility, scientific standing, and quality of the journal, and the impact of the research published within it. The Locum Chief Editor will manage the internal and external editorial teams and therefore the ability to form and lead a collaborative and focused team is crucial to the role and ensuring the continued success of the journal.

Responsibilities

With the guidance of the Publishing Director and the support of the other Chief Editors on the BMC Flagships and Editors on BMC Series journals, your core responsibilities include:

  • Prepare a high-level strategic plan for thegrowth and development of the journal

  • Determine and take responsibility for the content published in the Journal, ensuring growth in both quality and quantity

  • Handle original research papers, and work closely with other editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review

  • Recruit and onboard a team of external editorial board members

  • Liaise extensively with editors at other journals and with experts in the genomic sciences communities

  • Manage a team of editors, overseeing their day-to-day workload and ensuring manuscripts are handled in accordance with journal policies

  • Act as the main voice to represent the journal within the external research communities, meeting regularly with authors, reviewers, and external editorial board members to understand their priorities and needs

Experience, Skills and Qualifications

  • Educated to PhD level (or equivalent), in a relevant field

  • Broad interests and knowledge in genome science

  • Proven ability to develop long-term professional relationships with key members of the scientific community

  • Strong demonstrable editorial experience in the selection and processing of manuscripts to the level required

  • Experience in journal development

  • Strong interpersonal and influential skills with the ability to effectively negotiate and present to a high standard combined with strong written communication and editing skills

  • Experience in management, supervision or mentorship of junior team members

  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills, able to balance short-term deadlines with long-term goals

  • Self-starter with a positive, can-do approach to problem-solving

  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues at all levels and across all different portfolios

  • Willing to travel occasionally and represent BMC/Springer Nature at external events

  • Excellent level of knowledge of current challenges and opportunities in scientific publishing, including detailed knowledge of open access publishing

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $130,000 - 145,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
