Position Purpose
To support ongoing research in the van der Meer Lab.
Description
Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp Bachelors or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in a relevant discipline (for instance, Neuroscience, Psychology, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science)
  • One year of laboratory/research experience in neuroscience or a related field


Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability to learn quickly from direct mentoring, from observation, and from self-reflection.
  • Competent in laboratory methods, procedures and techniques related to behavioral and neural recording experiments in rodents.
  • Experience with computer programming in MATLAB or Python.
  • Good judgment in monitoring data quality.
  • Organizational skills to manage laboratory inventory and records.
  • Communicates respectfully with a diverse community.
  • Ability to work independently and apply critical thinking and sound judgment.
  • Good time management skills.

Key Accountabilities


Description
Research/Experiments

  • Performs rodent experiments, including but not limited to: behavioral training, stereotaxic surgery, and recording of neural signals
  • Constructs electrodes and optical fibers for neural recording.
  • Processes collected data using established analysis pipelines.
  • Identifies, troubleshoots, and corrects or recommends solutions to problems associated with experimental methods, procedures, and techniques; or equipment and facilities.
  • Adheres to laboratory safety requirements including general and chemical/hazardous waste safety disposal methods.
  • Training in the above will be provided by senior lab personnel.

Description
Laboratory Management

  • Monitors work in progress to ensure accomplishment is timely and in accordance with reasonable methods and standards.
  • Manages stock levels of lab consumables and helps organize lab space.
  • Assists in the maintenance of rat/mouse colonies including handling and weighing of animals, managing breeding pairs, and entering data into spreadsheets.

Records and protocol management

  • Maintains laboratory records of procedures.
  • Applies sound data management procedures, such as following naming conventions and backing up acquired data to secure locations.
  • Helps manage lab protocols.
