Summary:

The Director of Health Information Management (HIM) Operations provides leadership, oversight, and direction, for HIM operations for CHRISTUS Health. The HIM Operations Director works collaboratively with system Revenue Cycle, the facility Health Information departments, Patient Access Teams, Patient Financial Services, Shared Services, Case Management, Physicians, hospital leadership and management. The Director is responsible for supporting adherence to CHRISTUS standards and directives and other regulatory requirements including Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) the Joint Commission, and HIPAA standards related to HIM operations. This position is responsible for ensuring that the HIM operations are standardized, meet regulatory requirements, and meet or exceed established performance and accuracy standards and goals for the System. This position is expected to maintain effective professional relationships as appropriate to instruct, share ideas, and implement actions related to HIM functions and improvements. The ability to communicate effectively with all types of people at all levels is critical. This position also acts as a resource to provide education, consultation, and implementation of revenue cycle enhanced processes related to HIM and Revenue Cycle functions.

The Director of HIM Operations reports directly to the System Director of HIM and Coding.


Responsibilities:


  • Meets expectations of the applicable OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.
  • In conjunction with facility and ministry leadership, hire HIM Director ministry personnel, conduct performance evaluations, counsel employees in performance improvement, conflict resolution, disciplinary action, and coordination of employee schedules for adequate coverage.
  • Provide effective leadership and oversight for direct reports.
  • Foster an environment of teamwork and service excellence within the department.
  • Ensures compliance with CHRISTUS internal guideline requirements related to the maintenance of the legal health record.
  • Monitors and reports key performance indicators as required by Sr. leadership.
  • Develop plans for performance improvement for enterprise/facility HIM operations.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor policies and procedures, guidelines, and compliance plans as needed for enterprise HIM Operations.
  • Ensure compliance with the Office of Inspector General, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and state and federal regulations.
  • Ensure proper staffing and distribution of assignments.
  • Monitor changes in laws, regulations, and policies that impact HIM operations, including but not limited to the content and quality of the legal health record, the electronic technology used for the patient health record, release of information, completion of the patient record, and transcription.
  • Has extensive knowledge of health information management functions including electronic medical record systems, content, authorship, and authentication of health record documentation, release of information, coding and compliance, document management systems, information storage and retrieval, and record retention.
  • Has knowledge of governmental, federal, state, local regulations as well as accreditation agencies standards and rules related to HIM department and hospital operations.
  • Has knowledge of healthcare industry financial statistical and key HIM performance indicators.
  • Possess strong critical thinking skills.
  • Has excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Has a strong knowledge of common office software applications including Power Point, Excel, Word, etc.


Job Requirements:

Education/Skills



  • Bachelor's degree in HIM or equivalent years of experience required.



  • Master's Degree preferred.



Experience



  • 7 years of experience in an HIM department of a mid-large inpatient facility including 5 years in a managerial capacity required.



  • Experience with a centralized staffing model preferred.



Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications



  • RHIA, RHIT, or CCS credential required.
