Job Summary

The Executive Director, Health Technology Solutions, serves as a key stakeholder in setting the technical and architectural direction for UCSF Health. Working in close collaboration with UCSF IT Infrastructure department, develops and executes the organization's technology strategy. This role will lead and develop multiple technical teams within the Health IT department, including but limited to, patient-facing applications, EMR-specific technical support, clinical communications, CRM-solutions, and ancillary applications. The Executive Director, Health Technology Solutions will also be responsible for the development and implementation of a new IT-outsourcing model specific for our community and affiliated partners. This role will serve as the primary leader with UCSF Health Network Executive Leadership to ensure the organization's missions and strategic objectives are enabled and advanced by its information systems. The incumbent participates with clinical and operational leaders to establish strategic plans and objectives of UCSF Health. The Executive Director, Health Technology Solutions oversees the execution of a portfolio of major, complex, high-risk and strategically critical projects across the enterprise. This position is also responsible for the overall disaster recovery strategy for Health IT systems. This role represents the health system in systemwide, state and national meetings and other forums. S/he/they develops and sustains information systems and technology that are in compliance with organizational goals, values and mission.

This role will oversee a techincal and application staff of approx.70 professionals. Responsibilities of this position may also include serving as the IT Leader/Advisor on the senior leadership council for the Network and Coomunity Affiliate0 Business Unit and representing the Health CIO in various capacities. Direct reports to this position will include the Sr. Director of Solutions and Integrations, Director of Operational Technologies and the Director Partner Services and Community Affiliates

Key Functions of this role include:

  • Oversight and influence of overall Health IT technology and strategy, including new implementations and roadmap development
  • Technical leadership to the UCSF Health Network.

This position is classified as Hybrid for onsite work requirements.
  • This role allows partial or full days of remote work. Job duties require intermittent physical presence at a UCSF or affiliate location, for specific categories of activities. Onsite presence is expected to be approximately 3 days, but certain activities may require employee to be in the office for more extended periods.
  • Onsite activities may include, but are not limited to, executive meetings, collaboration meetings, customer meetings, team-building events, go-live readiness activities and support, 1:1 meetings, and team meetings.
  • A designated workspace will be assigned only in cases where employee comes to the office at least 4 days/week or for other documented physical or ergonomic special requirements. Hoteling options will be provided when needed. Job duties may require presence at additional UCSF and affiliate locations. The home office will be located at 1800 Owens Street, San Francisco, CA 94158.
  • Employee will be responsible for commuting expenses. Expenses to a location other than the assigned primary office location may be reimbursable to the extent that they exceed the employee's standard commute and follow UCSF policy.
  • While most onsite requirements will be known in advance, due to the variable nature of our work, employee may be requested to report to the office with 4 business hours of notice. Business hours are defined as 0800-1700 PST Monday-Friday.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $187,300 - $454,700 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

Clinical Systems is responsible for all aspects of the Electronic Health Record (APeX) and other clinical and infrastructure applications for UCSF Health hospitals, practices, affiliates and community partners.

Required Qualifications


  • 10+ years experience demonstrating advanced knowledge of system applications and technology concepts, policies, and practices, including planning, programming, development, deployment, testing, program integration, and user training and support methodologies.
  • 5+ years of experience demonstrating advanced skills in developing and implementing long and short-range strategic plans, evaluating and developing staff competencies, organizing operations, and fiscal management. Includes experience implementing large technology projects in multiple healthcare settings, including outpatient and acute care. Proven ability to manage concurrent implementations.
  • 10+ years experience in a senior leadership position demonstrating advanced leadership skills, with the ability to create and sustain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork and collaboration across departments for effective problem solving, conflict resolution, adherence to organizational values, and consistent achievement of objectives.
  • Advanced analytical and critical-thinking skills, with in-depth ability to develop and pursue goals, synthesize data to identify system vulnerabilities and apply creative solutions. Possesses operational expertise, business management, and strategic planning skills to integrate clinical technology with business requirements and drive operational execution.
  • Advanced ability to collaborate effectively with senior management and executive-level staff to develop, implement, measure and evaluate strategic goals and objectives.
  • Advanced communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and concisely to all levels of staff, senior management, customers and business stakeholders about programs, services, best practices, strategies and organizational mission and values. Strong writing ability for both complex technical as well as narrative work.
  • Advanced knowledge of healthcare information technology, programming, medical terminology, clinical practices and processes, and clinical information systems. Advanced understanding of clinical applications and integration with clinical workflows. Knowledge and understanding of interdependencies of functional departments and groups within the health system and external partners.
  • Ability to negotiate multi-year contracts, including developing and maintaining vendor and customer relationships
  • Able to work across multiple locations throughout the health system and affiliates, including occasional travel to other UCs or national conferences and user groups.
  • Bachelor's degree in health care information technology, computer science, or related area, and / or equivalent combination of experience / training.
