Job Title: Laboratory Science Professional (Open Rank: Entry - Principal)

Position #: 00833472 - Requisition #: 36652

Job Summary:

Our group takes an integrative approach that combines biophysical, biochemical, and biological methods to fully characterize macromolecular interactions that underlie disease progression. We utilize state-of-the-art techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to investigate atomic-resolution details of enzymes involved in infectious disease, cancer, and inflammation. Ongoing projects include:

  1. Bacterial proteases: Determining mechanisms of activation, protease specificity, and developing antimicrobial inhibitors.
  2. Bacterial metabolism: Characterizing novel metabolic enzymes.
  3. Cancer and inflammation: Investigating redox regulation and cellular signaling proteins.
  4. Enzyme dynamics: Studying allosteric mechanisms in key enzymes.

We are seeking a laboratory professional at any level who is motivated to apply and expand a wide array of experimental techniques. Training in specialized methods such as NMR and cryo-EM will be provided as needed.

Examples of Duties Performed

  • Molecular engineering (PCR)
  • Recombinant protein expression and purification (FPLC, HPLC)
  • Gel electrophoresis (protein and DNA)
  • Nuclear Magnetic Resonances (data collection, spectral assignments, relaxation experiments)
  • EM/Cryo-EM (data collection, refinement)

Additional Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with and support other investigators with laboratory and research functions
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research
  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical test process and evaluate results produced
  • Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas
  • Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructions
  • Review, complete and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information
  • Assist in the review and implementation of lab support policies, practices and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs

Laboratory professionals in this position will work in an experimental (wet) lab environment, handling biological samples and analyzing data using NMR and EM methods, which require a strong level of computer skills.

Work Location:

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.

Why Join Us:

Our department conducts research across a wide biological scale for fundamental scientific understanding with applications to many disease contexts. The overarching goal is to reach a level of molecular insight that helps develop therapeutic approaches to disease.

As biochemists and molecular geneticists, we are amid an unprecedented time of discovery - our conception of the molecular biology of cells is going from the equivalent of grainy black-and-white to high-resolution technicolor. From deciphering the choreography of transcription complexes, chromosomes, and RNA molecules within cells to developing novel approaches to 3D molecular structure determination to understanding how viruses hijack a cell's machinery and alter its metabolome, the researchers in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics (BMG) are at the forefronts of their fields both conceptually and technologically.

The University of Colorado offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, life insurance, retirement plans, tuition benefits, ECO pass, paid time off - vacation, sick, holidays and more.
