Summary

The Locomotive Operator / Brakeman will report to the Production Manager and will be a team member of the switching crew. This role switches railcars in the plant throughout various departments for AITX. The teams' goal is to ensure AITX operates at maximum capacity by maintaining car movement throughout the facility allowing each department to complete their task required on each car. The Locomotive Operator / Brakeman provides railcar movement in each department which supports the Longview Facility team.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Utilize a switch list to stage railcars in each department as instructed by the department supervisors.
  • Following AITX Switching Procedures to stage railcars in a safe and productive manner.
  • Follow AITX Blue Flag / Derail procedures to ensure cars are switched safely.
  • Operate trackmobile to switch and spot a variety of railway cars. Follow signals or Brakeman when handling cars.
  • Exercise care in operation of equipment to prevent injury to others and damage to equipment, buildings, and material moved.
  • Check equipment daily. Lubricate equipment, add fuel, oil, water, etc. and submit reports on defects as required.
  • Report difficulties and unusual conditions to Supervisor.
  • Switch, shift and spot railcars.
  • When working as a Brakeman, couple, uncouple cars, throw switches, signal locomotive operator to switch, shift or spot cars.
  • Precede railroad equipment when entering or leaving buildings, at crossings, and signal when safe to move.
  • Shift spot cars in accordance with instructions from Supervisors. Throw track switches as required.
  • Keep switches and tracks free of obstructions. Open and close doors of buildings.
  • Set and release hand brakes or block cars as required.
  • Place re-railers and assist in re-railing operation as required.
  • Open and reset de-railers.
  • Report damaged rails and equipment.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Minimum Years of Experience: At least 1 year previous experience preferred.
  • Industry Specific Experience: At least 2 years of Railcar experience
  • Highly organized and able to prioritize and manage time efficiently with the ability to handle stress in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Ability to work under tight time constraints, handle sensitive data, and multi-task so that deadlines can be met.
  • Minimum Education Requirements: High school diploma or GED required
  • Preferred Certifications in safety involving swithcing procedures or blue flag procedures.
