JOB DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the Deputy Director of Ferry Maintenance of the Staten Island Ferry. Under general supervision, lays out work, supervises Ship Carpenters in the construction and repair of ferries and other floating equipment, terminals and related buildings at the Staten Island Ferry. Performs related work.

EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS: Prepares and is responsible for the work of Ship Carpenters in altering, repairing and maintaining all types of floating equipment, pier installations and woodworking in the terminals and related buildings. Makes decisions relative to work procedures. Prepares work schedules and makes work assignments. Makes field inspections of vessels and pier installations relative to work progress or need for alterations, maintenance and repairs thereto. Ensures safe working environment for staff at their work sites. Estimates cost of jobs. Prepares job orders and tool and material requisitions and stores the same. Maintains equipment in good working condition. Supervises the complete operation of the department shop. Keeps records and makes reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Six years of full-time satisfactory experience, acquired within the last fifteen years as a ship carpenter performing construction or repair work in a shipyard, or at a ship repair facility, on a ship or other marine vessel, at a dock, or a waterfront facility or performing related marine carpentry. At least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity.

Within thirty days of appointment candidates must possess a valid Transportation Workers Identification Credential issued by the US Transportation Security Administration

1. Experience in cabinet and custom furniture making.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
DRUG TESTING REQUIREMENT: Candidates must pass a drug screening to be appointed. Supervisor Ship Carpenters are subject to random drug and alcohol testing during their employment.

TWIC REQUIREMENT: Once selected for employment at the Staten Island Ferry, federal regulations require that the applicant must either undergo a federal background check as part of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program or already possess a TWIC. The TWIC must be obtained within 30 days of appointment, and be maintained for the duration of employment. For further program information, visit: https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic.
