The incumbent in this position is responsible for the supervision of the Coding Support Staff and assisting with coding unit. The incumbent manages a variety of task for Central Coding unit, including but not limited to monitoring all paper charges, oversee the creating of accurate patient accounts, performance of daily charge posting, and at times, assist with Coding edits and other coding duties. The incumbent aids in the efficient operation of charge processing for multiple departments and SIU Healthcare Central Coding Unit. In cumbent is responsible for training of staff, onboarding all Coding Support Staff and Central coding staff, and provide support, input and applicable training for existing and new systems implementations as well as federal/state mandates. This position will serve as a primary administrative figure for the SIU Central coding staff that provides coding support for SIU Medicine providers. The incumbent will provide support to the Deputy Director of Central Coding, Reimbursement Coding Coordinators, Managers, and Asst-Managers with in PBS.

Examples of Duties

Administration 70%
. Creating and maintaining all NOED request, on boarding new staff members, and completions of all
payroll functions which include staff timesheets and request off, department calendar, scheduling
of meetings.
. Manage, purchase, all education, resources (ex:Codfiy, Coding books,) for the non-RSS and coding
staff.
. Conduct training of new and current staff within the Coding Support Staff and central coding
unit. Conduct exit interviews with all departing Coding Support Staff and coding staff.
. Monitor and create productivity stats for Coding Support Staff and coding staff.
. Provide expert advice and guidance to administrators, faculty, staff and other SIU departments
regarding charge entry, documentation, and other third-party guidelines.
Attend faculty/divisional meeting to inform faculty and staff of any issues or procedure changes
and recurring problems such as functions of completion of charge tickets, ect.
. Assist in resolving complex account problems for data entry and denials.
. Generate and work Patient Keeper and GE Centricity Business reports.
. Assist in the develop implement, and monitor necessary policies, protocols, and procedures for
the Coding Support Staff and coding staff.
- Design, update, and direct printed/paper charge tickets as necessary to maintain compliance with
coding and billing guidelines. Work with clinical departments for input to improve processes.
- Reconcile all paper charges, spreadsheets and Dropbox charges to ensure all charges have been
captured.
- Assist with maintaining the Experian claim scrubber edits system and TES edits to ensure
appropriate and related to coding and billing guidelines.
- Develop and implement necessary policies and procedures for the Coding Support Staff and coding
unit.
- Develop and Monitor ETM workflows and work lists for Coding Support Staff team, and assist
monitoring coding staff ETM workflows.
- Attend seminars/workshops and read publications to ensure updated on reimbursement policies of
payers such and Medicare, Medicaid and manage care payers.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervision 30%
- Provides day- to-day supervision for the Coding Support Staff, and Coding staff.
- Responsible for interviewing, hiring, training, and approving leave time requests of the, Coding Support Staff, and coding staff unit.
- Maintain responsibility for evaluating the work performance of the Coding Support Staff.
- Plans, organizes, directs and controls the activities of the unit in support of the duties and responsibilities outlined by the Assistant Director or Director of PBS or the CFO of SIU HC.
- Enforces SIU HC and PBS employee guidelines.
- Conducts regular unit staff meetings to provide statistical data on unit performance as well as general office/school updates.

Qualifications

- Any one or combination totaling six (6) years (72 months), from the categories below:
- College coursework in a health-related field, business administration/management, human resource management, or closely related fields, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
- 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
- Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
- 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
- Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
- Work experience in supervision or management or other positions of similar responsibility with experience in a healthcare environment working with medical claims, denials, rejections, referrals, and prior authorizations.
