General Summary of Position
The world class transplant surgery program at the MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute (MGTI) is seeking Organ Preservation Technologists to join our organ pumping and perfusion team. The newly established program will partner with the clinical leadership to expand organ pump capabilities, perfusion, and tissue collection.
MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute currently performs over 425 transplants annually, with both our Liver and Kidney transplant services being among the busiest in the region. We are expanding our services with the completion of the Verstandig Pavilion. This state of the art facility features a 52 bed dedicated transplant unit to provide ICU and IMC care, four dedicated Transplant Operating Rooms, and back-table - perfusion services support. This allows a unique opportunity to partner with our clinical teams to advance the science of solid organ transplantation.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • The organ preservation technologist will provide organ preservation services and maintain the organ preservation lab under the management of the Organ Preservation Manager and direction of the Director of Organ Transplantation
  • This position will help the pre-transplant team with data management and quality initiatives in an administrative capacity during office hours when not assisting in a transplant procurement
  • Assist in Organ Preservation Lab supply ordering, supply rotation and proper storage.
  • Perform organ evaluation according to MGTI protocol prior to transplant including sterile liver and kidney anatomy verification and dissection to prepare organ for machine perfusion evaluation, as well as performing Liver and Kidney needle and wedge biopsy according to the SOP
  • Monitor, maintain, and report perfusion parameters findings to the surgeon.
  • Collecting, storing, and analyzing organ viability and perfusion data.
  • Participate in research projects including collecting specimens, data entry, sample process and shipping.


  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education

    • Bachelor's degree Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, required
    • Master's degree Health-related professionals preferred
    • One year of relevant education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

    Experience

    • 3-4 years Healthcare setting required
    • Surgical Tech, OPO, Organ Pump Profusion Experience preferred
    • One year of relevant professional-level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.

    Licenses and Certifications

    • BLS - Basic Life Support required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Knowledge of surgical aseptic techniques, human anatomy, and physiology.
    • Familiarity with organ preservation devices (LifePort, OrganOx, or Transmedics
    • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Apps, Cerner and UNET Portal
    • Advance surgical dissection skills and tissue collection experience preferred.
    • Demonstrates ability to multi-task and prioritize in a rapidly changing and high- pressure clinical environment
    • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills required to facilitate team building and partnering with colleagues and peers

    This position has a hiring range of $52,728 - $92,664
