About the Job

Position Summary
The Veterinary Academic Advisor will provide comprehensive academic advising, student support services, and career coaching to veterinary students, a professional program. This position will also oversee the student peer tutoring program, ensuring effective tutoring strategies and support mechanisms are in place to foster academic success. The Advisor will work closely with Academic and Student Affairs to promote the professional and academic development of professional veterinary students.

Primary Responsibilities
1. Academic Advising and Student Success 40%:
Provide individualized academic advising to veterinary students regarding course selection, degree requirements, graduation plans, and academic policies.
Assist students in identifying and resolving academic challenges by making appropriate referrals to university resources such as tutoring, counseling, and specialized academic services.
Administer policies related to students' rights and responsibilities, ensuring students are aware of their academic standing and options including individual advising on academic probation and recovery plans for students at risk of academic failure.
Develop and implement academic support programs aimed at improving student performance and retention.
Collaborate with faculty and university resources to provide students with timely and relevant support. This could include the delivery of content in professional development courses.

2. Peer Tutoring Program Management 25%:
Oversee and manage the student peer tutoring and skills program (VetPAC and VetSkills), including the recruitment, training, and supervision of peer tutors.
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of tutoring services, providing feedback and support to tutors.
Ensure that the peer tutoring program aligns with the academic needs of students and fosters a collaborative learning environment.

3. Career Advising 20%
Offer career advising and coaching, helping students explore career options within veterinary medicine and related fields.
Assist students with professional development, including resume writing, interview preparation, and job search strategies.
Organize workshops and events related to career exploration and professional growth, including career fairs.

4. Collaboration and Liaison 5%:
Serve as a liaison between veterinary students and various academic departments, faculty, and university student resources, including our partnership with South Dakota State University.
Work collaboratively with faculty and staff to support student success initiatives and to address individual student concerns.
Contribute to the development and review of academic policies and procedures affecting veterinary students.

5. Program Administration 5%:
Assists in facilitating students and course evaluations under the direction of the Director of Academic Affairs and/ Assistant Dean of Pre-clinical sciences and Clinical and Experiential Learning.
Maintain accurate student records, advising documentation, and progress reports.
Maintain and administer course and instructor evaluations for the DVM curriculum. Assist in the development and implementation of academic policies related to advising and career services.
Serve as an ex officio on the Student Promotions Committee
Participate in the planning and execution of student-related events such as orientation, DVM interviews, white coat ceremony, career fairs, and graduation.

6. Other duties as assigned 5%

Supervision
This position will supervise student employees, mainly peer tutors, and may provide mentoring and coaching to other staff or project team members. The incumbent may recommend actions such as hiring, promoting, and disciplining student workers.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
* A Bachelor's degree plus at least 4 years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree in counseling, higher education, or a related field with 2 years of experience.
* Demonstrated ability to manage academic advising and student support programs at the graduate or professional program level.
* Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across departments and provide effective career coaching.
*Experience managing or working with peer tutoring or student academic support programs is highly desirable.

Pay Range: $58,000 - $72,000; depending on education/qualifications/experience

Time Appointment: 75%-100% Appointment
