Job Summary: Resident-Therapeutic Medical Physics 1 develops skill sets in the areas of treatment planning (3Dconformal, Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy [IMRT], brachytherapy), treatment delivery, ongoing patient treatment management (Electronic Medical Records [EMR], chart checks), dosimetry measurements (Thermoluminescent Dosimiter [TLDs], diodes, Optically Stimulated Luminescence Dosimeter [OSLDs], film, gels, water tank), monitor unit calculations, Low Dose Rate (LDR) and High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy, special procedures (Total Body Irradiation [TBI], Total Skin Electron Irradiation [TSEI], Stereotactic Radiosurgery [SRS], Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy [SBRT]), Quality Assurance (QA) techniques for x-ray linear accelerators, proton treatment machines, imaging modalities (Computerized Tomography [CT], Electronic Portal Imaging Devices [EPID], Cone Beam Computed Tomography [CBCT], On-Board Imaging [OBI]), and patient specific QA (x-rays, protons). Keeps up with the required reading assignments, gives oral presentations, and documents all procedures and tasks completed for evaluation by mentors. Able to independently perform the tasks assigned to that rotation, after the completion of a clinical rotation, as attested by a mentor. These services may be performed at both the LLUMC and LLUCH hospitals, and at other satellite centers and affiliated sites. This is a two-year residency program. May be required to work some nights, weekends, and holidays. May be required to travel to multiple locations. Performs other duties as needed.
Education and Experience: Master's and or PhD Degree in medical physics from a Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP) accredited institution required. Clinical physics rotations or internships preferred.
Knowledge and Skills: Knowledgeable about theoretical concepts behind various clinical medical physics processes required. Knowledge in various medical physics QA procedures, treatment planning, dose measurements (Thermoluminescent Dosimeters [TLDs], Optically Stimulated Luminescence [OSLDs], diodes, film, gels, water tank), radiation protection, shielding and safety, radiation regulations, brachy therapy, Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Stereotactic Radiosurgery SRS, anatomy and physiology, radiation biology, and imaging modalities (Computerized Tomography [CT], Magnetic Resonance Imaging [MRI], Positron-emission tomography [PET], Ultra-sound) required. Able to: read; write legibly; speak in English (and Spanish preferred) with professional quality; use computer and software programs necessary to the position; troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment. Able to relate and communicate positively, effectively, and professionally with others; be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies; work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; lead, supervise, teach, and collaborate; accept direction. Able to communicate effectively in English in person, in writing, and on the telephone; think critically; work independently with minimal supervision; perform basic math functions; manage multiple assignments effectively; work well under pressure; problem solve; organize and prioritize workload; recall information with accuracy; pay close attention to detail. Able to distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care; hear sufficiently for general conversation in person and on the telephone; identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the work place/patient care; see adequately to read computer screens, medical records, and written documents necessary to position; discern temperature variances through touch.
Licensures and Certifications: Must be eligible to take part I of the American Board of Radiology (ABR) exam in radiation therapy physics or has already passed the exam. Valid Driver's License required at time of hire.
