Veterinary Technician - Surgical Services - Days/Evenings

Position Highlights:

• Position: Veterinary Technician

• Hourly Pay Range: $31 per hour. The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.

• Location: Evanston, IL

• Hours: per diem; hours as needed

• Hours: rotating weekends; 4-10 hours shifts, they vary on each lab. 06:30am-17:30pm

• Required Travel: no

A Brief Overview:
The Veterinary Technician will be responsible for performing a wide variety of laboratory tasks including: daily monitoring, care, and maintenance of animals, administration of medications, anesthesia, surgical assistance, monitoring physiological parameters, collecting blood samples, assisting with necropsies and data collection. Under general supervision, collects, processes, and coordinates data, in support of simulation studies and education. Arranges, performs, and records simulations and interviews in strict accordance with specified protocols. Assists a wide range of personnel from primary care technicians to physicians.

What you will do:

• Knowledge and application of Endeavor policies and procedures that apply to job and area of responsibility.

• Performs physical examinations of animals and records finding to facilitate simulation center educational activities.

• Observe animals for signs of illness or disease.

• Treatment of animals under the direction of a veterinarian.

• Anesthetize and prepares animals for surgical procedures.

• Maintaining comprehensive accurate medical records and making daily entries into a lab notebook maintaining appropriate USDA, GLP and NIH records of facility and equipment sanitation and maintenance.

• Maintaining inventory and preparing surgical packs, sterilization procedures, adequate supply of stock or other items as needed.

• Assists with the planning and implementation of simulation activities to ensure orderly operations of the lab.

• Identifies and compiles lists of potential simulation subjects in accordance with study objectives and parameters, as appropriate to the individual position.

• Develops or assists in the development of simulation and interview schedules; contacts potential subjects to introduce and explain study objectives and protocol, and to arrange simulation sessions and interviews, either in person or by telephone.

• Conducts and records face-to-face and/or telephone interviews with subjects, in accordance with predetermined interview protocol, data collection procedures, and documentation standards.

• Reviews and edits data to ensure completeness and accuracy of information; follows up with subjects to resolve problems or clarify data collected.

• Responsible for accuracy and maintenance of evaluation forms and rosters.

• Need to proactive in set up and break down of various programs.

• Must be flexible with arrival and departure if courses are on off times.

• Maintains overall security of facility and strict adherence to policies of both CSTAR and MISTI lab.

• As appropriate to the specified position, codes and verifies data in accordance with specified protocol and coding procedures, and enters data into a computer database and/or spreadsheet application for subsequent analysis.

• Leads, guides, and reviews the work of students engaged in simulator activities as appropriate.

• Performs related duties as required or assigned.

• Ability to work multiple computer-based equipment.

• Must display courteous and professional manner through interaction, appearance, attitude, and written and oral communication with principal investigators and other employees in accordance with corporate Service Excellence expectations.

• Participates in Quality Assurance to ensure optimal simulations.

• Maintains confidentiality of simulator subjects.

• Provides optimal customer service through direct contact with simulator subjects/students.

• Ability to work with various medical educators

• Complies with any research guidelines as dictated by the NSUHS Corporation.

• Assume responsibility of appropriately setting up all equipment for specific educational course.

• Maintain and replace equipment as determined by use.

• Maintains appropriate stock of equipment utilized in simulation center.

• Assist in functional operation of equipment at both sites.

What you will need:

• 1-2 years of surgical Vet tech experience or Surgical SIM lab experience minimum

• Prior experience in research working with large animals or medical training (anesthesia or surgery) preferred.

• Familiarity with common laboratory equipment is a plus.

• Must have the ability to use fluoroscopy, ultrasound, and/or other imaging technologies.

• Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, and an outgoing, courteous manner in order to interact effectively and pleasantly with a wide variety of hospital and public individuals.

• Proficient computer skills, including the ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Apple and PowerPoint.

• Knowledge of Medical Terminology. Knowledge of planning and scheduling techniques.

• Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.

• Interviewing and data collection skills. Ability to understand and apply specified simulation procedures and protocols.

• Ability to evaluate, verify, and edit simulator data.

• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

• Ability to lead and train staff and/or students.

Education and licenses:

• Required: Associates degree in Biology, Physiology, Veterinary Technology or Vet medicine required.

• Preferred: Bachelors Degree

• Preferred: Certified veterinary technician (CVT) or licensed veterinary technician (LVT) degree.
