Essential Job Duties
Assist research scientists with ongoing lab and field projects on local and State water bodies. This includes travel to aquatic field sites to conduct field work in all weather conditions on a regular basis; operation and trailering of boats with outboard motors; maintenance of field equipment; calibration of data sonde sensors; maintenance of detailed logs and record keeping completed on each sampling date; analyses of water samples collected, including all aspects of required quality control/quality assurance; and assist in compiling all data reporting and final database entries. Also provide support for general duties in all aspects of the CAAE laboratories, education outreach program and administration

  • 4 year degree; or an equivalent combination of training and/or related experience
Department Required Skills

  • Must be able to work on shipboard at aquatic field sites on NC lakes in all types of weather within safety constraints.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds routinely
  • Responsible for assisting with basic maintenance of boats, boat motors, trailers, and trucks

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Experience with wiring diagrams and electronics
  • Familiar with programming cell phone modems and operation in aquatic field sites
  • Skilled in identifying and reporting data discrepancies in the Water Quality Analytical Laboratory
  • Experienced in identifying and reporting data discrepancies from field equipment
  • Has the general knowledge and experience essential for appropriate operation of laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Experienced in performing water quality analyses, including preparatory steps (for example, accurate calculation of chemical quantities for standard reagents)
  • Provides thorough preliminary documentation of experiments (design, procedures) in the laboratory and field
  • Able to work in a fast-paced learning environment and quickly learn the knowledge needed to perform various responsibilities of this position at a high level
  • Proficient in using software appropriate to the research objectives
