Position as an APM Materials Engineerfor the APM Vehicle Engineering team located in Pittsburgh, PA,LCS site reporting to the Train Design Engineering manager.

The purpose of this multifaceted role is to be the local specialist and referent for the definition, monitoring and validation of various materials for transit equipment parts. They also will be responsible for inspection of failed or damaged APM parts and equipment to determine root cause and help with developing any design improvements to prevent future failures. In addition, this person will be the APM Vehicle Engineering representative for special process and transversal related issues (i.e. painting, bonding, sealing, welding, FST, recyclability, etc.) as it relates to APMs. At times this person may also be assigned engineering design tasks as business needs dictate.

OBJECTIVES

You shall work in a product / project organization and in a context of international contracts.

You are the guarantor of the application of the Materials department rules (internal standards, technical reviews, hazardous and restricted materials) in the development of APM vehicle components.

You will also coordinate and review information for environmental and fire safety related issues as they pertain to APMs.

You will also at times be asked to contribute to the design and development of new APM equipment.

You will network with team members mainly within the APM Vehicle Engineering and Design departments, but also with various Projects, Manufacturing, Testing, Bids, Quality and Purchasing departments. In addition, you will be in contact with various Suppliers and Customers as necessary and will support the Special Process manufacturing team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the head of the department, you will be representing the APM Vehicle Engineering team within the internal organization, including:

At central level:



  • Participate in think tanks within the Alstom Train Design Organization (implementation of processes, edition of DTRFs, normalization, R&D new processes and materials, standardswatch).


At the project level:



  • Support the technical team in the preparation and validation of specifications with respect to metallic and composite materials and testing (destructive and non-destructive testing - magnetic particle, penetrant inspection, ultrasound, x-ray...) of casting parts, forged parts, sheets, etc.... andfollow up of the supplier technical specification.
  • Contribute to the validation of standard parts (fabricated, welded, molded and forged) for all projects by inspection.


  • Present and support reviews as required forvalues of materials includingenvironmental and fire safety related information.
  • Conduct, review and present values of magnet particle inspection.
  • Identify and confirm the relevance of shoot plans and compliance of x-ray films of functional parts with respect to specifications.


  • Support product quality team with customer related problems (issuingtechnical expert material related opinions, proposals for improvement, research of solutions).
  • Support purchasing teams and supplier quality inspection teams, eventual participation in supplier process audits as necessary and follow up of manufacturing process.
  • Contribute to selection, evaluation and qualification of suppliers and sub-contractors.


At the tender level:



  • Analyze the technical requirements (customer specifications) and provide estimates to the bid team for the effort required to satisfy customer and internal Alstom requirements.



EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

BS Degree in Materials Engineering and/or Physics, ideally specialized in non-destructive testing (NDT), welding, fiberglass and coatings.

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCES



  • 10 years experience as materials engineer, preferablyin a transit related organization.
  • Knowledge of different metallic materials and their characteristics, including fabrication processes.
  • Knowledge of material norms and tests.
  • Experience with NFPA-130 and ASCE-21 requirements a plus.
  • Knowledge of NDT.
  • Knowing how to analyze requirements with respect to technical specifications.
  • Knowledge of composites and latest industry developments.
  • Knowledge of protective coatings and platings.
