Seeking an Advanced Practice Practitioner (APP)- Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitionerto join Interventional Radiology services at Carilion Clinic. This position will be new role within a well-developed, advanced program offering a collaborative team, with nursing, radiologic technologists, (4) APPs and (7) physicians working together. The ideal candidate will have experience with performing the following procedures:

  • Ultrasound- guided thoracentesis and paracentesis, as well as, diagnostic imaging studies including upper GI series, esophagrams, arthrograms. Additional procedures may be requested depending on the needs of the department.
  • Experience is welcome; however, strong candidates without experience will be considered. All training and proctoring will be provided with direct physician and/or APP oversight. A collegial attitude is required.

This position will require regional travel between Carilion Medical Center- Roanoke Memorial, Carilion New River Valley, Carilion Giles Community Hospital, and Carilion Rockbridge Community Hospital. The candidate will work (4) 10-hour shifts per week.

  • Three days per week the APP will travel to one of the two locations (CGCH and CRBH) and one day per week will be at either Carilion New River Valley Medical Center or Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
  • No weekends or call coverage.

The ideal candidate will have experience with imaging, sterile-procedures, and a strong work ethic. The IR APP/Surgical First Assist provides billable surgical first assist services. They spend a minimum of 40% of work time providing surgical assist services. The rest of the time is spent working with patients doing pre-procedural assessments, rounding postprocedure and providing post-procedural assessment and care. This role includes responsibility for identifying the patient's health status through taking of health histories; performing physical examinations; initiating screening and diagnostic procedures; management of minor trauma and acute health problems; health maintenance and clinical management of stable or chronically ill patients.

What We Require:

Education:Bachelor's degree and graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program or Nurse Practitioner program required.

Experience: Clinical experience appropriate to specific practice/ department preferred.

Licensure,certification, and/or registration:Certification by the NCCPA or AANP/AANC required. Current Physician Assistants license (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) required. DEA licensure required.

Life Support:AHA BLS-HCP certification required. Advanced cardiac life support and Pediatric advanced life support is preferred and is required for those who may use a defibrillator in their practice.

Other Minimum Qualifications:Meets credentialing requirements. NP/PA's must complete the AAPA Fluoroscopy training program. PA's must obtain authorization to use fluoroscopy as required by the state of Virginia. Qualifies for malpractice insurance and is accepted by Carilion Clinic's malpractice insurance carrier. Ability to work collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers. Maintains open and supportive communications between all department members and other employees, patients and their family members. Commitment to continued professional development.
