The mission of the CERU is to enhance ophthalmic care and develop methods to prevent and treat blindness by providing service in clinical research, clinical trials, research education, as well as through interdepartmental and interdisciplinary collaborations

The University of Wisconsin Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Clinical Eye Research Unit is a robust team of experienced ophthalmology-specific research personnel, which enables the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences (DOVS) to meet and exceed the needs of sponsors and investigators. The unit is a key component of the research DOVS processes that include resident and fellow education, review board approvals, budget/contract negotiations, regulatory IRB submissions, and ultimately coordinating and conducting virtually all aspects of human clinical research according to the study design and protocol.

The Clinical Research Manager for the CERU will provide clinical support, leadership and supervision, while closely working with the CERU Medical Director to follow and advance the unit's mission. The manager will oversee the patient-related clinical activities of the research unit, including supervising a team of research coordinators, ensuring that all research activity adheres to applicable international, federal, state and institutional regulations, policies, procedures, and requirements. The incumbent must be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously and work independently using initiative and good judgment. The manager will help coordinate research activities, develop policies and procedures, to support research efforts as well implement processes to support the protocols and research aims. The incumbent will work directly with investigators, sponsors, clinical research organizations, and research teams to prepare and negotiate budgets and contracts. The position will review all billing both internal and external for research account reconciliation. This position will also interact with potential donors by giving tours of the unit and answering questions as well as providing education and information to potential stakeholders. The manager will work closely with the Medical Director to ensure the breadth and quality of clinical research, patient safety, research education as well as overall unit stability and growth in terms of staff, equipment, space and new research initiatives.


Responsibilities:
Plans, develops, and directs a clinical research program within a division, center, or department. Solicits clinical research opportunities, develops policies and procedures, and has significant responsibility for the overall functioning and effectiveness of the clinical research. Supervises clinical research staff.

  • 15% Plans staff implementation of protocols and on-going quality review of one or multiple, basic or moderately complex clinical research trials or programs
  • 25% Analyzes research portfolios and accounts, solicits internal and external research opportunities, promotes unit capabilities, and makes recommendations to leadership for strategic program enhancements
  • 10% Compiles audits and documents research data to ensure necessary compliance with institutional policies and procedures
  • 5% Composes, assembles, and submits grant proposals and protocols according to applicable rules and regulations
  • 25% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 20% Develops and monitors the program budget; and reviews and approves expenditures

Education:

Preferred
Bachelor's Degree
-Bachelors of Science in Business or health-related field preferred.


Qualifications:

Required:
-Minimum 5 years of clinical research experience.
-Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience.
-Minimum 3 years of regulatory experience.
-Attention to detail and good organizational, management, and office skills (examples may include time management, communication, setting goals, delegation, working under pressure, self-motivation, being a team-player, using analytical and creative thinking).
-Experience with databases and spreadsheets.
-Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills.

Preferred:
-CCRC (Certified Clinical Research Coordinator) or CCRP (Certified Clinical Research Professional) or equivalent.
-Experience leading a comprehensive team of staff in a research setting.
-Current/up to date with CITI training, human subjects and good clinical practice.
-Familiar with various UW programs: ARROW, WISER, RAMP, Florence, OnCore, REDCap, Healthlink.

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
