Job Description: American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter Location: Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD), Panama City, FL Job Summary:
We are looking for certified American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters to provide interpretation services across various events and daily needs at NSWC PCD. This role involves facilitating communication for deaf and hard of hearing individuals, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity in all organizational settings. Responsibilities:
- Interpretation Services: Provide ASL interpretation for individual hearing-impaired Government personnel or for large audiences, both face-to-face and virtually.
- Event Support: Attend and interpret at meetings, conferences, ceremonies, or any official NSWC PCD events as required.
- Video Recording Assistance: Support the recording of ASL interpretations for video documentation when needed for later use by NSWC PCD personnel.
- Travel Support: Accompany and assist hearing-impaired individuals during travel, including setting up interpretation services at off-site locations or during travel-related activities.
- Professional Development: Engage in ongoing training and professional development to maintain certification and stay updated with best practices in ASL interpretation.
Qualifications:
- Certification: Must be certified in American Sign Language (ASL) by a recognized body such as the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or equivalent.
- Experience: Proven experience in providing ASL interpretation services, preferably in a professional or governmental setting.
- Communication Skills: Exceptional ability to interpret between spoken English and ASL accurately and effectively.
- Education: A degree or equivalent training in ASL or a related field is advantageous.
- Flexibility: Ability to work varying hours, including possible travel up to 5% of the time as required by the job.
Preferred Skills:
- Government Experience: Familiarity with the Department of Defense (DoD) or Navy protocols related to accommodations for disabilities.
- Cultural Competency: Understanding of deaf culture and community needs.
- Technical Proficiency: Comfortable with video recording and playback equipment for interpretation purposes.
