Job Summary

Performs general boatyard maintenance and schedules preventative maintenance on all vessels and vehicles at Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC). Operates vessels in accordance to USCG standards and provides training to all vessel operators. In addition, provides general field support for Biscayne Bay focused research conducted by FIU scientists and students, including piloting vessels, maintaining field and laboratory data collection devices and operating autonomous vessels.

  • Responsible for maintaining the vehicle log as well as the inventory of all boats and truck parts at BBC. Organizes, receives, stocks and transports materials and equipment to worksites.
  • Provides phone support of callers with boat and vehicle breakdowns in the field
  • Maintains BBC-resident research vessels and vehicles
  • Serves as vessel operator to provide support and/or rescue researchers in the field.
  • Works closely with interdisciplinary, cross-institutional teams in support of the Institute of Environment's (IoE) initiatives in Biscayne Bay to enhance collaborative partnerships that foster the research, education, and overall goals of the program.
  • Provides assistance to PIs and other program staff on implementing programs, new Biscayne Bay environmental research initiatives, and special projects.
  • Manages vessel operations needed to support Biscayne Bay programs involving deployment/retrieval of autonomous vessels. Ensures compliance with rigorous safety and regulatory standards, safeguarding people, assets, and the environment
  • Serves as the technical support lead for FIU Biscayne Bay environmental research programs by operating vessels and vehicles, maintaining field and laboratory equipment and leading field excursions.
  • Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, storms, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.
  • Performs other related duties as required or directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position
Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED is required and 6 years of relevant work experience; OR an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

Departmental Requirements

Valid US Coast Guard OUPV/Six-Pack Captain's certification
