Summary

The Overhead Engineering & Design departmentis seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented individual to develop designs for complex projects involving the installation, relocation, or re-conducting of overhead distribution and transmission facilities. This role requires expertise in creating design drawings using software tools such as PLS-CADD, AutoCAD, and other computer-aided design programs.

The Designer III/Senior is responsible for preparing and updating project cost estimates using database estimating programs and managing material and equipment requirements, including specifying, ordering, and expediting. Field investigations, project management, and providing construction support and clarification are key components of this role. Additionally, the Designer will coordinate workflows to meet departmental needs and collaborate with internal teams, external agencies, and customers to ensure project success.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Develop designs for complex overhead distribution and transmission projects.
  • Create and update design drawings using PLS-CADD, AutoCAD, and related tools.
  • Prepare and revise project cost estimates using database estimating programs.
  • Specify, order, and expedite materials and equipment for projects.
  • Perform field investigations and provide construction support and clarification.
  • Maintain workflow schedules to meet departmental deadlines.
  • Coordinate with internal departments, external agencies, and customers to ensure project alignment.

Minimum Requirements

Designer III

High School diploma/GED. Must have completed two years college or technical school course work in CADD or a technical discipline (or equivalent) plus four (4) years related design experience in area of specialization. Must demonstrate effective interpersonal, communications and PC skills in a Windows environment. Requires a valid AZ driver's license.

Experience with PLS-CADD, Sag & Tension programs, Primavera or other scheduling program, Maximo or other work management program and Maximo CUE or another estimating program is preferred. Knowledge of the APS Safety manual and operational procedures is preferred

Designer Senior

High School Diploma/GED. Must have completed two years college or technical school coursework in CADD or a technical Discipline (or equivalent) plus six (6) years related experience in area of specialization. Must demonstrate effective interpersonal, communications and PC skills in a Windows environment. Requires a valid AZ driver's license.

Major Accountabilities

1) Produce accurate, concise, thorough, easily understood engineering documents, using manual or CADD techniques and related software; may assist in the development of Design Change packages or simple to medium job package projects that are technically sound, within the schedule provided.

2) Gather, organize and develop Engineering data; perform field investigations to determine as built conditions and design requirements; perform studies and required computations for the development of design drawings. May perform Plant walk-downs for constructability and design verification.

3) Ensure that all project commitments are achieved. Insure conformance to procedures, government regulations and selected codes and standards in the performance of related tasks.

4) Compile all required documentation for assigned projects into a complete package, submit the package for review and approval and expedite transmittal of documentation to the appropriate field units and files.

5) Apply appropriate skills to resolve issues and apply critical thinking in resolving problems.

6) Demonstrate an understanding and an ability to utilize all systems and applications used in project design.

7) Effectively work in a team environment and provide a positive contribution.
