Fire Prevention Services ensures a safe environment for faculty, staff, and students by providing an up-to-date prevention program. Purpose

The Senior Fire Protection Engineer is responsible for reviewing fire protection system designs for commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. This role ensures that all designs adhere to applicable codes and standards, supporting the safety, functionality, and compliance of the University's facilities. Additionally, the engineer will play a key role in fostering safe, code-compliant, and environmentally responsible spaces for the University community.

Responsibilities
  • Conducts fire risk assessments on buildings and facilities to identify potential fire hazards, evaluate fire protection measures, and recommend improvements to enhance fire safety.
  • Creates new or revises existing FPS Standard Operating Procedures, Campus Standards, and Technical Specifications.
  • Develops emergency evacuation plans, fire drills, and procedures to ensure occupants' safe evacuation in case of fire emergencies.
  • Examines, offers feedback on, and authorizes relevant permit applications.
  • Performs plan review of contractor submittals (including but not limited to - Fire Alarm, Fire Sprinkler, Fire Extinguisher, Commercial Kitchen Hood, and Emergency Responder Communications Enhancement Systems) for compliance wit applicable codes, UT Standards, and project documents and provides comments.
  • Provides fire and life safety code consulting to FPS Staff, building managers, Campus Operations, contractors, primary service providers, and CSUs on designing and specifying fire detection, alarm, suppression, and sprinkler systems to meet regulatory requirements and mitigate fire risks effectively.
  • Provides project support on new construction and renovation projects by attending design and construction meetings. Drive University vehicles. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4.
  • Review building plans and construction documents to ensure compliance with fire and life safety codes and standards before new construction, renovations, or substantial completion is issued on the UT Austin Main Campus and satellite campuses. Provide input during the design phase to incorporate fire safety features effectively.
Required Qualifications

Education and Certification: Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. A professional Engineer (PE) license is required. Technical Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of fundamental building codes, including: NFPA 13, 25, 72, 101; International Building Code (IBC); Texas Accessibility Standards (TAS); Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); Basic knowledge of fire prevention system design, engineering, and layout principles. Skills and Abilities: Proven ability to complete project assignments accurately and on time. Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction drawings. Capability to work safety in and around construction sites while adhering to established safety practices. Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with upper management, clients, project teams, and construction personnel. Technical Proficiency: Experience with software tools, including spreadsheets, word processing, scheduling and modeling programs. Solid understanding of construction specifications and their application in project execution.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: A Master's degree in Fire Prevention Engineering. Experience: At least five years of experience in design review of fire protection systems for institutional renovation projects and new construction. Professional experience with a fire and life safety engineering firm, including: Conducting fire and life safety plan reviews; Performing NFPA 101 surveys; Orgnaizing and authoring detailed professional documentation. Hands-on Experience testing fire alam systems to ensure compliance with Texas codes, local city ordinances, and NFPA 72 standards.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.

Salary Range

$100,000 + depending on qualifications

  • May be required to perform elevated work. Occasional work from ladders and/or scaffolds.
  • May require tuberculosis screening and occasional use of a respirator.

  • Participate in on-call program.
