What your job will be like:

Manages the Jefferson Lab Radiation Control (RadCon) Program. Leads the development and implementation of health physics and radiation protection programs, processes, and systems to protect the radiological health and safety of workers, members of the public, and the environment. This program is critical to the mission of Jefferson Lab.

As the manager, you will lead a team responsible for executing a radiological control program that is compliant with 10 CFR 835 and supports the scientific mission of the Lab. The program components include identification of radiological hazards, implementation of mitigation measures, radiation shielding design, and assessment of safety systems.

You will lead and manage the Radiological Control Department, create and administer the department budget, and assess staff performance, including applying supervisory and mentoring skills in staff development.

In this role you will:

• Develop, administer, and maintain a Radiation Control program to ensure radiation safety of workers, public, and the environment.
• Provide analysis of radiological source terms and mitigation measures, including developing solutions to complex technical issues where limited precedents are available.
• Recommend engineering controls and work practices consistent with Jefferson Lab's As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) personal radiation exposure policy and the Jefferson Lab Safety Assessment Document.
• Administer the radiological portion of the environmental monitoring program and the personal radiation exposure monitoring program.
• Manage department staff (technical, engineering, scientific, and administrative), budget, personnel actions including hiring, promotions, performance expectations, priorities, and professional development.
• Develop work processes to maximize efficiency and effectiveness.
• Keep apprised of changing laws, regulations, standards, and Department of Energy orders; propose new or amended policies and procedures to ensure Laboratory objectives are effectively met.
• Represent the Lab on radiation control issues in discussions and review with the Department of Energy, other governmental agencies, national laboratories and external bodies as appropriate. Participate in the review of other DOE sites and laboratories upon request.
• Prepare and conduct presentations for specialized training and orientation.
• Supervise subcontractors and vendors hired by the RadCon department as necessary.

Qualifications We Require:
Education:

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Science,Health Physicsor related Environment, Safety and Healthdegree required. A Master's Degree ispreferred.
• Widely recognized as a technical expert within the professional community required.

Experience:

• 15 years of relevant experience required.
• Education above the minimum can be substituted for experience.
  

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Expert level of technical knowledge and skills, knowledge of applicable regulations and guidance documents as well as management skills.
• Demonstrated technical competence and experience in the identification of radiological hazards, implementation of mitigation measures, radiation shielding design, and assessment of safety systems.
• Demonstrated ability to work on multiple, complex technical projects requiring forefront of-the-field, innovative solutions.
• Recognized high level of technical expertise in radiological control at experimental accelerator facilities.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments and budgets.
• Demonstrated ability to manage administrative, technical, engineering, and scientific personnel.
• Demonstrated excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to give effective presentations to critical/high level customers and effectively represent the program on review panels and cross-organizational teams.
• Ability to independently identify complex problems and actively devise appropriate solutions that often cross organizational boundaries.
• Conduct technical studies.
• Deliver thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
• Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals and levels of the organization to achieve goals.
