Who We Are
BioMarin is a global biotechnology company that relentlessly pursues bold science to translate genetic discoveries into new medicines that advance the future of human health. Since our founding in 1997, we have applied our scientific expertise in understanding the underlying causes of genetic conditions to create transformative medicines, using a number of treatment modalities. Using our unparalleled expertise in genetics and molecular biology, we develop medicines for patients with significant unmet medical need. We enlist the best of the best - people with the right technical expertise and a relentless drive to solve real problems - and create an environment that empowers our teams to pursue bold, innovative science. With this distinctive approach to drug discovery, we've produced a diverse pipeline of commercial, clinical and preclinical candidates that have well-understood biology and provide an opportunity to be first-to-market or offer a substantial benefit over existing therapeutic options. About Worldwide Research and Development From research and discovery to post-market clinical development, our WWRD engine involves all bench and clinical research and the associated groups that support those endeavors. Our teams work on developing first-in-class and best-in-class therapeutics that provide meaningful advances to patients who live with genetic diseases. SUMMARY:
The BioMarin Summer Internship Program will enable students to gain valuable experience and knowledge of the processes and systems within BioMarin, while gaining an insight into the pharmaceutical/biotech industry. Over the course of 10 - 12 weeks our interns gain industry experience while working alongside our talented team on meaningful projects.
The Human Genetics Department at BioMarin is currently offering an internship opportunity for a student in Genetics to join its Statistical Genetics Team. The Human Genetics Department is involved in a wide range of research, from functional 'wet lab' work to statistical analyses of 100,000s of samples' genomic data. The Statistical Genetics Team focuses more on the latter, using such genetic data to make insights that help BioMarin to identify novel drug targets and support the clinical development of such therapeutics.
JOB DESCRIPTION/PROJECT:
The successful candidate will be actively engaged in analyzing human genetics and genomics data to help identify treatable patient populations and drug targets. The key roles will revolve around using big-data statistical analysis of genomics data to build evidence in support of a gene's involvement in disease biology, investigate potential mechanisms for targeting genes of interest, and combine genetic data with clinical to identify suitable patient populations such treatments may benefit.
As such the role requires a combination of scientific curiosity and hypothesis generation, and a strong statistical skillset to generate evidence in support of these hypotheses. The successful candidate will also be an individual who enjoys teamwork, is organized and a self-starter who is very keen to gain experience in cutting-edge approaches to find a cure for patients in a pharma industry setting. In return we would offer training in the latest statistical genetic approaches, access to world-class genetic datasets for exploratory analyses, and exposure to a cutting-edge research environment.
We hope the role will provide a fantastic opportunity to see how the approaches used in academic statistical genetic research are being taken into drug discovery and development. This makes the role perfect for both those with an interest in moving into industry after their studies, and those keen to expanding their experience into an exciting, more translational research area.
