Overview

The Production Underwriter is part of the commercial property sales and marketing department at AmTrust. In this role, you will travel to different insurance agencies to develop relationships with the agents and promote AmTrust's products and services. Once you have established a contract with an agency, you will work with the underwriting department to analyze the financial risk of applicants that come in through that agency and determine if they qualify for coverage. This role will service new, and renewal accounts for agents and producers assigned within the territory in compliance with company underwriting, authority, and pricing standards. You often need to review loss history reports, credit checks, and independent inspections. Maintains a solid understanding of AmTrust's mission, vision, and values. Upholds the standards of the AmTrust organization.

The salary range for this role is $100-110K, this range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in Maryland. Base pay offered may vary depending on, but not limited to education, experience, skills, geographic location, travel requirements, sales or revenue-based metrics. This range may be modified in the future.



Responsibilities

    Develop strong business relationships with key agents and provide underwriting guidance to the agents.
  1. Write and retain a profitable book of business through solid risk analysis, pricing and servicing. Maintains compliance with state filings and adheres to corporate underwriting and pricing guidelines. Operate within written authority grant and makes referrals to Home Office Underwriting as required
  2. Collaborates closely with territory team. Keep peers and Territory Management informed of all issues and activity
  3. In collaboration with Territory Management, develop and implement the territory business plan and share accountability with team in meeting territory goals
  4. Select, price, and develop coverage terms for commercial lines accounts to achieve profitable underwriting results and assist with providing leadership, support, and coaching for the underwriting function
  5. Manage a territory of independent agents to ensure that profitability and growth objectives for the company are being met
  6. Review new business applications to evaluate the degree of risk involved, review applications for completeness (contact agents for missing/incomplete information), and accept or decline risks based on the company's underwriting policies
  7. Maintain and establish a good working relationship with agents and communicate underwriting decisions to agents and insureds
  8. Coach and collaborate with the team to develop, manage and maintain outside client relationships, which will include traveling in the territory to meet with agents, producers and nonprofit associations or organizations. Actively plan and participate in industry events as required such as but not limited to agency or association conventions
  9. Provides professional, timely and courteous communication and service to external clients and cross departmental staff to successfully resolve issues pertaining to policyholders and territory producers
  10. Provides the pertinent information and guidance to support staff required to process coverage requests in accordance with service guidelines
  11. Collaborates with territory team on reports and update databases as required
  12. Other job duties may include developing underwriting guidelines for your company and training new staff


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree with a background in insurance or equivalent experience
  • At least 5 years of underwriting and marketing experience at a company or agency level with a minimum of 5 years of underwriting experience should be in the commercial lines sector of insurance
  • Demonstration of self-development through the attainment of professional insurance designations, CPCU, ARM, PLU, etc.
  • CPCU or CIC designation preferred, or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to create business opportunities by demonstrating excellent underwriting skills and product knowledge. Must possess a value-added service mentality
  • Demonstrated experience with and expert technical knowledge of commercial casualty, property, automobile, workers compensation and umbrella insurance coverage and risk selection, methods and pricing.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and analyze data and make an informed, calculated risk decision
  • The expectation is this employee will travel 2 to 3 days per week to visit agents in the designated territory.

Preferred:

  • 10 years of commercial line property and casualty experience
  • Ability to make sound contributions to tactical and strategic planning
  • Ability to train, coach and mentor individuals of various backgrounds within area of expertise
