Engineering a world of possibilities
The Department of Mining Engineering (MN) is seeking a passionate advocate to increase undergraduate enrollment in the Departments' degree programs by executing recruitment activities initiated by various Mines offices, as well as MN Department designed activities which focus on accepted students and undeclared undergraduates.
Emphasis on recruiting from underrepresented groups and women would contribute to building an inclusive Mines community. The Outreach Development Coordinator will be required to coordinate with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Office of New Student & Transition Services (NeST), Center for Academic Services and Advising (CASA), Office of Communications and Marketing, and the Office of Student Activities, Involvement and Leadership (SAIL). Effective outreach tasks include, but are not limited to, designing and executing an encompassing and dynamic program that includes outreach events to excite and inspire students about relevant mining careers and degree programs in the Department of Mining Engineering, creating and updating marketing materials, coordinating student-alumni-industry interactions, meeting individually with students, and supporting other tasks that nurture a personalized approach to outreach.

Objective: Increase the number of undergraduate students majoring in the Department of Mining Engineering degree programs.

Responsibilities:

The Coordinator will serve to design, implement, and augment plans that support enlisting first and second-year undergraduate students as well as prospective undergraduate students to Mining Engineering degree programs. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

Lead efforts for enlisting undergraduate students:
  • Design and execute a dynamic program for prospective and current students, including a focus on women and underrepresented students to promote inclusivity, that educates, inspires and excites them about majoring in mining engineering.
  • Develop a team of undergraduate students who will serve as Mining Engineering Department Student Ambassadors who have been trained to appropriately promote the department and the mining industry.
  • Collaborate with Mining Engineering Department Head and staff on metrics to measure the success of the program.
  • Seek input and feedback from internal stakeholders to understand the needs of prospective mining engineering students. This knowledge is key to being able to effectively recruit students. There is also a solid base of recruitment experience which, when tapped into, will increase effectiveness and reduce time wasted on ineffective activities.
  • Design highly captivating department recruitment materials to deliver during participation in relevant activities across campus. These activities include but not limited to Discover Mines, Explore Mines, Oredigger Camps, Celebrate Mines, Girls Lead the Way, Homecoming, Friends and Family Weekend, Major Fair, and any other potential recruitment activities.


Marketing:
  • Coordinate among Mines Marketing and Admissions internal stakeholders and Alumni supporters to design and update marketing materials to reflect the diversity of careers encompassed by the Department of Mining Engineering. A variety of marketing strategies should be implemented.
  • Coordinate among Mines Marketing and Admissions internal stakeholders to effectively distribute marketing materials.
  • Partner with Mines Marketing office to promote programs and opportunities to current students through internal news channels and tools.
  • Develop a strong and dynamic social media presence that excites students about majoring in mining engineering degrees programs.


Speaker and Event Organization and Coordination:
  • Organize and participate in events where discussion of Department programs and careers is included, in coordination with internal Mines stakeholders, including but not limited to Admissions, Career Center, CASA, and student groups.
  • Develop effective communication plans that advertise these events and maintain a public calendar of these events. Collaborate with internal stakeholders on communication strategies to promote clear and consistent messaging.
  • Connect current students, alumni, and industry leaders via these events and other opportunities, and support speakers with marketing materials/messaging.
  • Identify opportunities in the surrounding community to deliver presentations regarding program content on the degrees offered by the department and the potential career opportunities available through gaining a mining engineering degree.


Personalized Approach:
  • Collaborate with the Office of Admissions, Center for Academic Services and Advising, Marketing/Communications, New Student & Transition Services, and Student Life to identify prospective outreach contacts.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for current students as well as prospective student/family inquiries and/or visits.
  • Provide personalized guidance and follow up support to prospective and current students interested in joining the Departments.


Administrative Support and Data Collection and Analysis:
  • Implement all administrative or coordination tasks as required to execute the outreach and development program for the Department of Mining Engineering.
  • Track, assess and report outreach and development activity achievements; quarterly reports and meetings with the Department Head and staff are required.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure students entering the Department degree programs receive robust support (e.g., advising, career planning, mentoring, administrative assistance, etc.).


The position will manage and execute these procedures and tasks with a high degree of independence in decision making and functioning.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors' degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • Experience in an office setting, coordinating programs among multiple stakeholders, coordinating and executing events.
  • Comfort in engaging with a diverse group of people, including senior level executives at companies, CSM faculty, staff, and students, alumni, and individuals from underrepresented groups.
  • Proficiency with computer software and managing social media platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience with and/or passion for working with students and engaging in outreach.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with the mining discipline and careers.
  • Knowledge of Mines, either as an alumni or other affiliation.
  • Significant event/programming planning skills and experience.
