Job Summary

The Quality and Safety (Q&S) Program Manager will work under the direction of the Director of Patient Safety for UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals (BCH) to manage quality and safety programming, planning, implementation of BCH projects. The Program Manager will oversee BCH's participation in Solutions for Patient Safety (SPS), a pediatric patient safety collaborative. This includes managing the activities of participation including safety data collection and submission, participation with network initiatives related to hospital acquired condition reduction, and implementation of SPS strategies at BCH to contribute to national and regional goal achievement. The Program Manager's responsibility is to maximize BCH San Francsico and BCH Oakland's alignment with SPS recommendations and best practices.

The Q&S Program Manager also implements and manages quality and safety training to all levels of faculty, trainees, and staff. The Program Manager is responsible for operationalizing effective training to maximize participation and spread of foundational quality and safety knowledge to clinical and operational partners.

Involves the establishment and supervision of processes (e.g., performance improvement, clinical documentation, etc.) to achieve the optimal degree of excellence in the services rendered to every patient. Evaluation of practice operates within the parameters of patient outcome, cost-benefit in care provision, and patient access to the health care delivery system. Provides for internal strategic planning efforts and implementing continuous quality improvement programs.

The Program Manager will lead other projects that could span any part of the UCSF children's enterprise, requiring the role to collaborate across all disciplines in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $118,700 - $213,400 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals (BCH) Quality & Safety department is made up of 2 divisions-Patient Safety and Quality Improvement. The department provides improvement, safety science, program development, quality data, and external reporting expertise to the pediatric inpatient and outpatient enterprises. The divisions are made up of individuals with clinical and non-clinical backgrounds, and have skillsets in clinical quality improvement, project and causal analysis facilitation, program and project management, data analysis and interpretation, and data abstraction, and collaborates with individuals across many parts of the broader UCSF organization.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare related profession, or a combination of related education and / or experience.
  • Able to build and maintain positive working relationships with key stakeholders inside and outside of the Department of Quality
  • Knowledge of MS Office software programs or equivalents. Ability to run analytical (MS Excel and other) reports and summarize information
  • Strong analytical and/or operational problem-solving skills. Demonstrates ability to conduct and interpret quantitative and qualitative analyses and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, electronic, written)
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent judgment in attention to process and detail, and follow up on relevant clinical issues.
  • Flexibility to orient and work at BCH-Oakland and BCH-San Francisco sites
  • Brings an improvement mindset to day-to-day work, by thoughtfully challenging the status quo and seeking to improve own work and collaborate with others to improve their work
  • Advanced organizational and project management skills, with the ability to lead a team, prioritize tasks, and see projects through from inception to completion on schedule.
  • Advanced critical thinking and problem solving skills to manage multiple levels of highly-complex information and responsibilities, to quickly assess problems, and to develop and implement timely and effective solutions.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills for collaborating effectively with all levels of clinical and technical staff and representatives of external agencies.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master's degree in public health, healthcare administration, business, or related area, and / or equivalent combination of experience / training
  • Advanced ability to effectively convey complex clinical, technical, and educational information both verbally and in writing, and to produce high quality reports, documentation, and presentations.
  • Advanced skills to influence and persuade staff, management, and clinicians at all levels and across departments.
  • CPHQ, Lean certification, or other Improvement certification
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
