Position Purpose:

Signature Science seeks a highly motivated and results-oriented Forensic Science Advisor (Genomics emphasis) to join our team. In this role, you will be at the forefront of cutting-edge forensic science, providing expert consultation, technical guidance, and insightful reporting to active laboratory operations performed by accredited facilities. You will play a critical role in advancing our understanding of DNA analysis through research, validation, and the implementation of innovative technologies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Lead and Conduct Research:



  • Plan, execute, and analyze validation studies for novel DNA methodologies and established laboratory procedures.
  • Develop and implement research protocols to address critical challenges in forensic DNA analysis.


Technical Expertise:



  • Provide expert consultation and technical direction to laboratory personnel on complex casework, including the interpretation of single-source and multiple contributor DNA profiles.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues, ensuring the highest standards of data quality and laboratory performance.


Method Development & Validation:



  • Develop and optimize new DNA analysis methods, including those utilizing advanced technologies such as microarray and Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS).
  • Conduct rigorous validation studies to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and robustness of new and existing methods.


Scientific Communication & Documentation:



  • Prepare comprehensive and concise scientific reports, including technical reports, validation summaries, and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Author and review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), proposals, and other technical documentation.


Quality Assurance:



  • Participate in quality control activities, including instrument function checks, preventative maintenance, and data integrity assessments.
  • Investigate and resolve nonconforming events, ensuring compliance with all relevant quality standards.


Laboratory Operations:



  • Provide technical support for routine laboratory operations, including DNA extraction, quantitation, PCR, and sequencing on an intermittent basis.
  • Ensure the proper handling, storage, and chain of custody of biological evidence and data.


  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The qualified candidate must have: a fundamental knowledge of genetics and molecular biology as applicable to human DNA, prior experience with microarray and/or NGS technologies, experience with other molecular technologies such as DNA extraction, quantitation, PCR, and associated analysis and interpretation methods including probabilistic genotyping. This individual must be highly organized, adept, and capable of working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. U.S. Citizenship is a prerequisite for application.

Essential:



  • In-depth knowledge of forensic genetics, molecular biology, and statistical genetics.
  • Proven expertise in human genotyping and sequencing technologies, particularly microarray and NGS.


  • Experience working in a forensic laboratory environment.
  • Familiarity with DNA analysis of diverse sample matrices, including challenging samples such as touch DNA.
  • Experience with data analysis and interpretation of complex DNA profiles, including use of probabilistic genotyping software.
  • A strong publication record in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and scientific data analysis software.


  • Enthusiasm for genetics, DNA technology, and working both operational and research environments.
  • Willingness to perform a hybrid role that includes advisory responsibilities and laboratory activities.


Education/Experience:

Master's degree in Biological Sciences or a related field with 7+ years of relevant laboratory experience, or a Ph.D. with a strong focus on forensic DNA analysis. Candidate must meet FBI QAS education requirements for DNA Analyst.

Clearance:

This position requires that the candidate be willing and able to obtain and maintain a security clearance and an in-scope polygraph. Candidates with a current security clearance will receive preference.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

May serve as a task/project lead.

Working Conditions/ Equipment:

Ability to work in varying conditions to include traditional office environments with extended sedentary periods and active hDNA laboratories. May have potential contact with hazardous materials, including biological fluids when performing laboratory activities. On occasion may be required to lift ~40 pounds.
