Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science

Job Description

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science (NERS) at Missouri University of Science and Technology is looking for an assistant professor to develop a transformative, interdisciplinary research and teaching program focused on addressing societal grand challenges through nuclear technology.

Position Description

As an assistant professor in NERS, you will:

* Pursue cutting-edge, externally funded research;

* Deliver high-quality graduate and undergraduate education to a diverse student body; and

* Help NERS recruit students and engage with national laboratories, industry, professional organizations, and other stakeholders to enhance the department's research and education mission.

About the NERS Department

Ours is one of the earliest Nuclear Engineering programs established in the US, and became the NERS Department in 2021. We promote hands-on, career-focused learning and solution-oriented research in nuclear technology. The department is currently home to seven tenured/tenure-track faculty and three staff who support 180 undergraduate students and 23 graduate students. We aim to become a nationally recognized leader in advanced reactor development and deployment, biotechnology applications of nuclear science, and big-data science in nuclear technology. Our students have risen to the challenge. The Missouri S&T student chapter of the American Nuclear Society has earned the Samuel Glasstone Award as the top student chapter for the last two years. Undergraduate and graduate researchers are working with national laboratories, the Naval laboratories, and companies across the US to develop solutions to pressing technical challenges.

These education and research missions are supported by the Missouri S&T Reactor, a 200 kW pool-type reactor operating since 1960 that is extensively integrated into the Nuclear Engineering degree program. This includes offering students the opportunity to become licensed reactor operators and incorporating them into the day-to-day operations of the facility.

This and programs like it make NERS graduates a hot commodity in the job market. The student chapter of Women in Nuclear hosts a nuclear career fair each year, and 2024's event brought over a dozen employers and 100 students together. Over 97% of our students find a job within six months of graduating.

Qualifications

A successful applicant will:

* Have an earned doctoral or other terminal degree in nuclear engineering or a related STEM field from an accredited university;

* Demonstrate the potential to develop a successful, externally funded research program; and

* Demonstrate the potential to effectively teach courses in nuclear science and engineering.

Candidates from all areas of Nuclear Science and Engineering with expertise that can advance these strategic initiatives are welcome. Those with independent research or industrial experience and/or who have strong interdisciplinary interests and the vision to leverage existing expertise and infrastructure across Missouri S&T are preferred.

Candidates with careers in industry, the national laboratories, and other institutions are encouraged to apply. Highly qualified candidates may be considered for tenured appointment at associate professor level.
