Position description

The Harwell Lab, located at the UCSF Parnassus Heights campus, is seeking a highly motivated candidate interested in conducting basic science research with a focus on studying the molecular mechanisms of brain development. Specifically, the candidate would be working with mouse models of early brain development to understand mechanisms of progenitor competence and cell fate determination. Ideally the candidate will be knowledgeable in molecular biology techniques including recombinant gene engineering and retrovirus production as well as surgical techniques including in utero electroporation. The candidate should also be knowledgeable in brain anatomy, mouse genetics, single cell transcriptomics, bioinformatics, and proteomics.

This full-time position will involve working closely with the PI as well as members of the laboratory.

You will become a member of the vibrant research community at the UCSF Parnassus campus and your chief responsibilities will include molecular biology, rodent surgery and tissue and cell culture, managing stocks and supplies in the lab, and independent literature research, including presentations at the regular lab meetings. This position is for one year and ideally suited for an individual with a molecular biology experience who is looking to gain further research experience on the way to further career development. Good communication skills are essential. Reappointment will be considered but is not guaranteed.

Appointees in the Specialist series will be expected to engage in specialized research, professional activities and do not have teaching responsibilities.

Specialists are expected to use their professional expertise to make scientific and scholarly contributions and may participate in University and Public Service.

Specialists appointed at the Full rank must possess a terminal degree (or equivalent degree).
