CT Surgery Advanced Practice Specialist
Job Summary Clinical nurse leader for a program or area of nursing practice. Utilizes specialized knowledge and skills within major areas of focus, such as patient / family, nurses and nursing practice, and the organization / system. Typically partners with the nurse manager/division director in leading the nursing clinical practice area. This is the journey level for an advanced practice clinical nurse specialist.
The Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery Clinical Nurse Coordinator is a nurse who, because of advanced education, in depth clinical knowledge and experience in cardiothoracic surgery, the medical and surgical treatment as well as ongoing management, possesses the skills necessary to provide expert coordination of care for a variety of patients with complex heart diseases including those who will undergo cardiothoracic surgery for coronary, valve and aortic disorders. The specialized knowledge and advanced skills required for this role include clinical expertise in the management of the critical care patient population and related nursing care; design and implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP); education and mentorship; consultation; performance improvement; and team leadership. Under the general direction of the Director of Heart & Vascular Inpatient Services and the Chief of CT Surgery the primary responsibility of the Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery Clinical Nurse Coordinator is the management and coordination of the highest quality pre and post-operative care, which is to be delivered in a cost/effective manner for patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgical procedures in the Moffit/Long Hospital and ORs as well as patients receiving medical management in the outpatient clinic setting. The Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery Clinical Nurse Coordinator provides leadership for collaborative management, with emphasis on education and continuity, of patient care for the entire episode of care, pre-admission, hospitalization, discharge and follow-up. The Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery Clinical Nurse Coordinator ensures that patients receive high quality multidisciplinary care, provides a clear framework for decision-making, and participates in creating an atmosphere of mutual trust, acceptance, recognition and respect, functioning in the roles of clinician, consultant, educator and researcher.
The Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery Clinical Nurse Coordinator will triage patient communication and work with the team to meet the needs of this patient population. The Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery Clinical Nurse Coordinator will monitor processes, therapeutic benefits and side effects of multiple therapies. The nurse coordinator will facilitate communication among but not limited to the faculty, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, house staff, Patient Coordinators, referring physicians/offices, support services, external agencies (Home Health, Skilled Nursing, Skilled Rehab, Wound Care, Anticoagulation Management), patients, families and patient care staff regarding hospitalized patients who will be discharged to maintain continuity of the follow up care. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $209,447 - $235,840 (Annual Rate). Department Description Cardiothoracic Surgery is a fast paced and rapidly evolving program. This is a specialty in which diagnostic tests and treatment, conventional open and minimally invasive surgeries, mechanical support are provided for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, structural heart disease, coronary heart disease, valvular and aortic diseases. Cardiothoracic Surgery, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, technologists, coordinators and schedulers are specially trained in coordination and provision of surgical intervention and treatment from initial referral through the post-operative period.
Required Qualifications
- Five (5) years of clinical employment within the past seven (7) years, preferably in Vascular Surgery
- Recent clinical outpatient experience, preferably Adult Vascular Surgery in-depth knowledge of one or more clinical specialty areas, to include diagnoses, treatments, standards of practice and patient / family educational consulting and resources
- Advanced knowledge of methodology for conducting evidence-based research, data collection, analysis, and reporting
- Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess highly-complex issues and develop multiple options for resolution
- Development and implementation experience with peri-operative and inpatient clincal and ERAS pathways for the Cardiothoracic Surgery Patient
- Demonstrated ability to use outcomes data to formulate and implement quality initiatives
- Advanced interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide education, training, and direction to nursing staff, and to develop positive working relationships with patients, families, employees, and outside agencies as required
- Advanced skills in written and verbal communications, with the ability to convey complex and / or sensitive information in a clear and concise manner

License/Certification
- Registered Nurse in the State of California
- Current California licensure as an RN/NP, RN/CNS, CRNA, MHA MBA or DNP, Master of Science in Nursing
- Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist, Master of Science: Nursing, Nurse Practitioner (FNP, ANP, ACNP or AGACNP) or licensure / or certification in area of specialty.

- ACLS
