Position: Supervisor, Central Operating Room Efficiency

Department: Operating Room/Integrated Procedural Platform (IPP)

Schedule: 40 Hours, Rotating (Day/Night/Evening)

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Central Operating Room Efficiency Supervisor is a professional nurse who functions as a clinical supervisor and resource for staff. Primary responsibilities include supporting and optimizing clinical operation in the OR to ensure both efficiency and safety. This role combines clinical oversight with administrative responsibilities to maintain high-quality patient care and staff performance. This role works under the direction of the Clinical Flow Manager and collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to ensure readiness of equipment and materials, address emergent situations promptly and support ongoing staff development. This role also involves coordinating staffing needs, monitoring adherence to hospital protocols and participating in quality improvement initiatives to enhance OR performance.

EDUCATION:

Requires graduation from an accredited baccalaureate nursing program. Internal candidates with demonstrated commitment and subject area expertise may be considered with an Associates or Diploma in Nursing.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

Requires license to practice professional nursing as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. CNOR preferred but not required.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

1.0 Provides appropriate level of clinical support, coordination, and supervision to staff in relation to patient care in the operating room.

Assists staff to assess and prioritize patient care needs and collaborates to develop, implement and evaluate appropriate action plans.

1.2 Facilitates smooth and safe patient care by supervising and supporting staff assigned to ORs throughout the day including assigning breaks, lunches and reliefs, and facilitating timely room setup and turnover.

1.3 Acts as a liaison between Surgery, Anesthesia and ancillary departments to optimize patient flow and care.

1.4 Collaborates with Service Line Coordinators, Materials, CPD, and Peri-operative Assistants to assure appropriate resources, materials, instruments and equipment are available in a timely manner.

1.5 Assists staff to accurately interpret and reinforces adherence to established policies, procedures, protocols, guideline, standards and regulatory requirements.

1.6 Assesses emergent situations and provides required patient care assistance when unexpected needs/crisis situations occur, e.g., code situations.

1.7 Performs practice standards, policies, care environment and documentation audits to ensure adherence to standards. Assess surgical schedule and procedural booking to optimize OR efficiency.

1.8 Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age group of patients regularly served. Consults appropriate resources when patients outside the regularly served age populations are present.

1.9 Implements clinical and administrative duties in a manner that preserves and protects autonomy, dignity, confidentiality and rights.

1.10 Implements clinical and administrative duties in a non-judgmental and non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to and demonstrates respect for practices and staff diversity.

1.11 Participates in collaboration with appropriate nursing leaders in the development of clinical nursing competencies and practice standards appropriate for the care of diverse patient populations.

2.0 Accountable for competent performance of assigned managerial and administrative duties.

2.1 Effectively coordinates nursing personnel to provide optimal patient care based on knowledge of patient needs and acuity and level of staff competence.

2.2 Provides direct supervision for float and per diem nursing staff.

2.3 Provides general supervision to all other departmental and ancillary employees. Documents and communicates staff issues to appropriate staff manager.

2.4 Provide staff with timely, constructive written and verbal feedback regarding their professional development.

2.5 Conduct, when necessary, independent investigation of employee incidents involving clinical practice issues inclusive of review of employee personnel files, discipline record, and evaluations.

2.6 Assures compliance with all aspects of union agreements, federal and state laws and regulations that pertain to healthcare and labor relations.

2.7 Contacts nurse manager or nurse director in a timely manner to discuss and formulate required actions for various clinical or administrative issues that may arise.

2.8 Communicates interventions taken in response to administrative, clinical or quality issues and their outcomes to nurse managers, and/or nurse leadership etc.

2.9 Participates in the interview process for staff and leadership candidates as requested.

2.10 Recommends employees for promotion or non-promotion, identifying improvement areas for staff not being promoted.

3.0 Contributes to the education and development of staff, colleagues, and others.

3.1 Provides constructive feedback to clinical instructors and nurse managers regarding staff learning and performance levels.

3.2 Facilitates orientation/remediation process for new and experience staff through effective collaboration with the clinical instructors and nurse managers.

3.3 Takes initiative to share knowledge, skills, and expertise with colleagues and staff in the development of self as a clinical and administrative resource.

3.4 Assists in the orientation and/or acts as a preceptor for newly hired CORE supervisors as requested.

4.0 Systematically evaluates the quality, cost, and effectiveness of nursing practice.

4.1 Identifies nursing phenomena and/or systems appropriate for study or required improvement.

4.2 Validates that clinical practice meets established standards through participation in various phases of the hospital or department's quality improvement process as appropriate to the individual's knowledge level and practice environment.

4.3 Provides leadership in generating clinical inquiry and critical thinking among staff to make appropriate clinical decisions or determine the best interventions.

4.4 Provides for a safe patient care environment and supports the hospital's risk management program through the timely and accurate completion of employee injury reports, incident reports and other required paperwork.

4.5 Assists with and supports hospital and departmental cost containment initiatives and practices.

4.6 Uses the results of quality improvement, and research, as well as knowledge of patient care needs and staff expertise as a basis for own decision making when faced with administrative and/or clinical issues.

4.7 Participates in the development and maintenance of operational systems related to staffing, scheduling, payroll, and acuity.

5.0 Commits to own professional growth and development.

5.1 Identifies independently own learning needs and participates in ongoing educational activities to enable competent performance of assigned administrative and clinical duties.

5.2 Completes the annual mandatory hospital and departmental educational requirements such as BCLS recertification, safety and infection control review, department and leadership competencies, etc.

5.3 Leads or participates as a committee/task chair/member when requested and communicates appropriate information to related hospital and departmental committees and staff.

5.4 Participates in professional, community, and/or governmental organizations or committees that function to advance the nursing profession and/or improve healthcare delivery to consumers.

5.5 Meets with Clinical Flow Manager regularly to review progress within professional development goals, receive feedback, and discuss opportunities for further growth, skill building, and leadership support.

6.0 Other duties

6.1 Utilizes hospital's Values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the division's hospital mission.

6.2 Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

6.3 Performs other duties as needed.

EXPERIENCE:

Demonstrated expertise in recent clinical nursing practice with 3-5 years of operating room experience. Demonstrated leadership experience is preferred but would consider related experience.

  • Requires analytical ability to solve clinical nursing issues, manage budgets, supervise staff and conduct quality improvement projects.
  • Must have excellent organizational skill to appropriately set priorities and efficiently complete work.
  • Advanced verbal interpersonal and writing skills in order to perform required leadership duties.
  • Basic computer proficiency inclusive of ability to access and enter data from computerized information systems.
  • Work requires physical ability to perform core job responsibilities in accordance with the setting demands for patient populations regularly served.
