The Senior Manufacturing Engineer plays a pivotal role in improving and developing Smith and Nephew Additive manufacturing methods to produce high-quality medical device products. This manufacturing engineer will focus on Additive Manufacturing.

Working under the mentorship of the Manufacturing Engineering Director, you will contribute to the development of new processes, introduction of new products, cost reduction projects, and capital justifications for new equipment in the Additive Manufacturing Business. You will help transform the additive manufacturing environment.

What will you be doing?

  • Additive Manufacturing Focus
  • Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM): Develop and optimize part designs specifically for additive manufacturing processes, ensuring improved functionality, reduced material usage, and alignment with production goals.
  • Process Development and Optimization: Establish, document, and refine additive manufacturing processes, including material selection, parameter setting, and post-processing techniques to ensure consistent quality and efficiency.
  • Production Integration: Collaborate with multi-functional teams to integrate additive manufacturing technologies into existing production workflows, driving innovation and cost-effective solutions.
  • Quality Assurance and Testing: Implement testing, inspection, and validation protocols for additive-manufactured components to meet industry standards and company-specific requirements.
  • Facilitate new product introduction and support design transfer work.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain manufacturing methods, operation sequences, and processes.
  • Provide technical expertise and support for fixing and resolving manufacturing-related issues.
  • Lead equipment installation and validation activities including:
  • User Requirement Specifications (URS)
  • Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
  • Installation Qualification (IQ)
  • Operational Qualification (OQ)
  • Performance Qualification (PQ)
  • Validation Report Approval (VRA)
  • Drive capital projects, from financial justifications through project execution.
  • Optimize manufacturing processes for efficiency, quality, and scalability.
  • Estimate manufacturing costs, establish time standards, and recommend tooling and process requirements for new or existing product lines.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective and preventive actions to address manufacturing issues and non-conformances.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance manufacturing processes, reduce waste, and improve product quality and reliability.
  • Work with design engineering to coordinate the release of new products, conduct investigations, identify corrective and preventive actions, and support material disposition in collaboration with the Quality group.
  • Support the transfer of manufacturing processes and products to internal or external manufacturing sites, including validation activities and process documentation.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation, including manufacturing procedures, work instructions, and validation reports.
  • Participate in internal and external audits and inspections, providing documentation and support as needed to demonstrate compliance with regulatory requirements and quality standards.
  • Develop Process Maps, process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA), Measurement System Analysis (MSA), and other risk analysis tools.
  • Demonstrate courage in proposing and implementing new insights, driving them to completion.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and manufacturing personnel to cultivate their professional development and uphold quality standards.

What will you need to be successful?

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering required
  • Master of Science in Engineering is a plus
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with Additive Manufacturing with a Bachelor's degree or 4 years of experience with a Master's degree
  • Required Additive Experience
  • Design for additive/assembly/manufacturing
  • Experience in metal additive manufacturing
  • Experience in developing print jobs using Magics or 3D Expert or other software.
  • Experience in Plastic Additive manufacturing desired
  • Experience in project management and success in implementing projects required.
  • Lean certification is a plus
  • Experience in CNC machining, metal finishing processes, additive manufacturing, and/or passivation systems is desired.
  • Material experience/knowledge with manufacturing using various materials including Titanium, Cobalt Chrome, Stainless Steels, and medical-grade plastics is desired.
  • Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Experience with process characterization, analysis, control, and validation using statistical tools and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Leadership in continuous improvement projects.
  • Experience in the medical device industry is preferred.
