About the Job

This position is for a full-time staff research engineer at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, University of Minnesota. The employee will work within SAFL's Applied Research and Engineering Team and will be responsible for supporting contract research services in the areas of river hydraulics and sediment transport, dams and reservoirs, lakes and shorelines, and other specialized environmental or water resources problems. The employee will work with SAFL Associate Director for Engineering and Facilities, university faculty, and SAFL technical staff and researchers. We seek a reliable and motivated engineer who is interested in helping develop applied research areas in the broad area of environmental hydraulics.

Project Design and Management and Construction (60%): This position will assist with project design, management and construction. This involves hands-on work that contributes to physical model design and construction.

Data Analysis (20%): This position will work with faculty, staff and researchers on analyzing data related to water resources engineering and fluid mechanics

Program Development and Public Communication (10%): The position also carries responsibility for assisting with public communication program development, and provides the opportunity to collaborate with academic, agency, and industry partners.

Proposal and Report Writing (10%): We also seek someone who is willing to write proposals and project reports that are accurate and timely.

Qualifications

Required:
- BS plus at least 2 years of experience in civil, environmental, water resources, mechanical, geotechnical, or aerospace engineering, OR a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal at least 4 years
- Experience and demonstrated success in data collection and analysis, contributing to project reports and proposals.
- Interest in participating in an engineering research setting.
- Must be able to work safely in construction, laboratory, and field environments including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs and traversing difficult terrain

Preferred:
- Experience in research settings relating to water resources engineering or fluid mechanics.
- Experience with hydraulic physical modeling - model design, construction and operation.
- Experience and demonstrated success in managing engineering projects including budgeting.
- Professional Engineering License or ability to become licensed in MN
- Familiarity with data collection and instrumentation such as flow measurement, data loggers, telemetry, and environmental sensors.
- Experience in consulting engineering.
- Familiarity with commercial 1D and 2D hydraulic modeling software
- Demonstrated experience with construction or shop tools
- Computer aided design software experience
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google suite Apps

The St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL) is an interdisciplinary fluid mechanics research lab and educational facility under the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota.
