Research Associate

The Division of Nutritional Sciences (the Division) plays a leading role in national and international nutrition research, teaching, and public engagement. Focal areas for faculty research include precision nutrition, metabolism, lifecycle nutrition, microbiome, and nutrient interactions, food and nutrition systems, health equity, and social and behavioral nutrition.

The Johnson lab is seeking to welcome a research associate to the group who specializes in metabolomics with experience in novel metabolite discovery and comparative metabolomics. This researcher would work across multiple projects that aim to understand the precise mechanisms that define how infant diets contribute to gut microbial metabolism with opportunities to explore diet-microbiome-host interactions across multiple systems. Main responsibilities would include acquiring, analyzing, and interpreting metabolomics data from microbiome samples, methods development, sample processing, working with graduate students, manuscript preparation and the potential to follow up on observations in research models depending on the interest of the individual.

The Johnson lab sits in the Division of Nutritional Sciences and is a leader in coordinated efforts to support research excellence in the Microbiome Sciences at Cornell University. The candidate would have access to a rich interdisciplinary scientific community that spans multiple departments and colleges. Required Qualifications:

• A PhD in chemistry, chemical biology, molecular biology or any relevant fields with a dissertation that includes a focus on microbial or mammalian metabolism.
• At least 3 years of experience in a postdoctoral or position in metabolomics
• Ability to operate liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry systems
• Experience with bacterial genetics or related genetic systems
• Experience with techniques in comparative metabolomics
• Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
• Strong written communication skills
• Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with lipid biochemistry desired
• Experience handling microbiome/microbial samples
• Experience working with milk samples

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. This is a fixed term appointment, 1-year appointment, with the possibility of renewal contingent on available funding, work, and successful performance. This is an on-site, in-person position.
